Paralegal/Legal Assistant

Job Summary: 

The Paralegal/Legal Assistant reports to the Associate General Counsel of Southern Nuclear and provides overall paralegal and administrative assistance to the Associate General Counsel department.  A minimum of five years’ experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant is preferred. This position is responsible for managing all outside counsel billing for Southern Nuclear; therefore, experience with Legal Tracker (or similar) billing software is preferred.  The successful candidate must have exceptional organizational and decision-making skills, must be a self-starter and possess the ability and desire to work through changing priorities with minimal supervision.  Finally, the successful candidate must have an exceptional working knowledge of computer office applications.  This position is located at the Corporate Office in Birmingham, AL.

Experience Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or higher; Paralegal Degree or Certification from an ABA accredited program preferred
  • Significant experience as a Paralegal or in a legal administrative/secretarial or support role (5 years or more strongly preferred)
  • Experience with outside legal billing software (Legal Tracker) strongly preferred.  If no previous experience, ability to quickly learn and become proficient with Legal Tracker.
  • Exceptional computer knowledge & skills using office applications (i.e. Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word, Web Top Documentum, etc.)
  • Legal research skills, particularly computer-based research, specifically with NRC’s ADAMS database
  • Experience with effectively dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to independently manage legal invoice database; coordinate with outside law firms; monitor and review invoices; serve as liaison between Company and outside law firms; track legal spend
  • Ability to prepare monthly legal accruals and budget forecasting
  • Ability to manage legal holds; prepare litigation holds and related communications
  • Assist with quarterly and annual compliance disclosures
  • Exceptional administrative skills (i.e., excellent customer service & phone skills, excellent time management skills, scheduling & planning meetings/conference calls, preparing agendas & materials for meetings, recording & transcribing meeting notes, making travel arrangements, preparing & processing expense statements, electronic file management, budget oversight)
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information
  • Exceptional organizational skills with ability to prioritize & multi-task
  • Exceptional communication & listening skills, while demonstrating a high level of attention to detail
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word, Web Top Documentum, etc.)
  • Ability to make decisions and anticipate next steps 
  • Knowledge of business expense, travel, and timekeeping guidelines and procedures
  • Knowledge of electronic timekeeping systems, expense processing systems, and training management software
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment with demonstrated ability to work independently and juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
