About this role:

This in-person position will be located at Carrier’s headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

This attorney will manage the defense of the company’s commercial, contracts, warranty, general claims, discontinued operations and other product and non-product liability matters, including litigation concerning business partner/distributor/dealer disputes, bankruptcy, employment, benefits, insurance coverage, environmental, and motor vehicle accidents disputes.  This attorney will direct outside counsel and actively participate in formulating all aspects of case strategy; coordinate discovery; attend trials; develop case evaluations and advise the company on case resolutions.

Accordingly, strong skills and experience are necessary in the following areas:  legal issue identification; legal research through Westlaw and/or Lexis (including case law, statutes, regulations, etc.); contract analysis; deadline tracking; fact gathering; analysis and evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of legal claims and defenses; analysis of resolution strategies (e.g., settlement, positioning for dispositive motions, trial, etc.); and direct client contact.  He/she also will be responsible for working with internal business partners, lay and expert witnesses and other associates on cross-functional teams. A successful candidate should have extensive litigation experience drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery requests/responses, overseeing document review/production, preparing witnesses for deposition or trial, and have first/second chair trial experience.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the defense of commercial, contracts, discontinued operations and other product and non-product liability matters, including active involvement in all aspects of litigation, from the pleading stage through trial and appeal.
  • Assist with non-litigation matters affecting the company’s business operations, including responding to subpoenas, garnishments, writs and other legal requests.
  • Work with more experienced in-house attorneys to support high-exposure litigation matters
  • Maintain excellent relationships with internal clients and outside counsel as a valued member of the Carrier Legal team

Required qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
  • US State Bar admittance; and in good standing
  • 5-7 years major law firm and/or similar in-house experience with primary emphasis in commercial litigation

Preferred qualifications:

  • Self-starter with experience independently managing commercial litigation disputes/cases; should have experience supporting complex, high-exposure and multi-party disputes
  • Experience defending various types of commercial litigation, and in particular, industrial/manufacturing industry disputes
  • Experience representing Fortune 500 companies
  • First/second chair trial experience
  • First chair experience taking witnesses at trial or in hearings, taking/defending depositions, arguing motions (preferably dispositive motions), and representing clients in mediation or settlement proceedings
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
