Job Description

Job Summary

The Court Clerk I will assist the Chief and Deputy Court Clerk in the daily functions of the Court. The incumbent will perform clerical functions for the Tribal Court administration.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate with the Chief Court Clerk in management of the Court calendar, schedule, hearings, and dockets.
  2. Prepare and maintain notifications, court orders, minute entries, legal correspondence, documents, and files.
  3. Attend court proceedings and prepare accurate records as assigned.
  4. Assist the public in filing civil petitions and complaints.
  5. Answer the telephone as principle operator for the Court.
  6. Work closely with the Chief and Deputy Court clerk on all matters.
  7. Fill in during the absence of other clerks of the court.
  8. Attend staff meetings.
  9. Accept and record all fines, fees, bonds, and child support payments.
  10. Maintain confidentiality in all court proceedings.
  11. Issue jury summons and keep records of jury proceedings.
  12. Maintain an accurate juror list in accordance with the Tribal Code.
  13. Refer public to appropriate legal authorities.
  14. Participate in staff trainings when requested.
  15. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic knowledge of court procedures;
  • Ability to communicate in English/Spanish,(Yaqui preferred but not required);
  • Business English, spelling and arithmetic;
  • Clerical processes and office machine operations;
  • Chronological, alphabetical, and numerical filing procedures;
  • Knowledge of computers;
  • Undertake multiple tasks and priorities under pressure;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Maintain records and prepare records;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public;
  • Follow written and verbal instruction;
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Operate standard office equipment;
  • Planning, organizing and maintaining work flow;
  • Translate legal requirement into easily understandable terms;
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with adults and children;
  • Make basic mathematical computations with speed and accuracy;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Education, Certifications and Experience Required

High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of general clerical experience: or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends.

Salary
  • $34,444.80/year
