Job SummaryThe Associate Legal Counsel assists the Sr Vice President and Chief Legal Officer in all aspects of legal representation for UMC Health System

Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:
• Provide general legal services and counsel for UMC Health System as assigned by and under the direction of the Chief Legal Officer and Senior Associate Legal Counsel.
• Provide advice and guidance on a variety of legal matters brought to the Legal department, which may include, without limitation, interpretation and implementation of state and federal laws, procurement matters, general business matters, licensing, physician arrangements, access to care, conflicts of interest, clinical research, medical staff issues, risk management, legal process, and hospital operations.
• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on legal issues.
• Review, draft, revise, and evaluate numerous types of agreements including, without limitation, physician contracts, leases, licenses, clinical research studies, supply chain contracts, and more.
• Participate in committee, management, and other meetings as legal counsel.
• Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in the law affecting UMC Health System
• Assume primary responsibility for review, analyzing, and approving, clinical research agreements, purchasing contracting, real estate transactions, and clinical ethics.
• All other related duties assigned.
Education and Experience
• Graduate from an accredited school of law
• + 3 years of practicing law experience, preferably in corporate or healthcare law
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
• Active licensed membership with Texas State Bar Association
Skills and Abilities
• Ability to analyze problems, interpret and apply the law accordingly
• Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws applicable to Health System in particular, laws and regulations applicable to healthcare, Texas local governmental entities, and non-profit organizations
• Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office, internet, Lexis Nexis, Westlaw, etc…
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
This position interacts with the Board of Managers, Executive Staff, Division Directors, Department Directors, and the staff of multiple departments. In addition, interacts with physicians and TTUHSC staff. This position is a system level position representing UMC and its affiliates.
Physical Capabilities
This position is of medium demand, occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or frequently exerting a small amount of force to lift, carry, pull and move objects. Work involves sitting most of the time with frequent walking or standing for periods.
Environmental/Working Conditions
This position is subject to inside environmental changes that may include constant change in temperatures.
