- Job Responsibilities
Assists in the supervision, planning and management of legal and compliance to include complex issues, litigation, & personnel functions.
Assists with development and revision of policies/procedures, responds to legislative requests for information and responds to constituent concerns
Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials, and other agencies in the interpretation of state and federal law and agency policy/provisions.
Conducts independent, complex legal research in matters related to the agency and interprets and communicates decisions to agency officials.
Remains abreast of the compliance status and assists with review and evaluation of mental health settlement agreement issues/concerns.

- Minimum and Additional Requirements
- State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and experience as a practicing attorney.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:(Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to the S.C. bar.
Must be or, within six (6) months, become member of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.
Minimum of ten (10) years' experience as a practicing attorney to include a minimum of five (5) years in a supervisory capacity.
Will require daily contact with inmates, travel to institutions throughout South Carolina, and oversight of execution litigation and proceedings.
- Preferred Qualifications
Preferred requirements: legal experience in governmental agency representation or related civil litigation is preferred. Knowledge of theories, practices and principles of effective management. Knowledge of state and federal law, agency policies, standards and procedures. Ability to supervise and motivate employees. Ability to interpret and apply policies, laws, and judicial decisions. Ability to establish policies. Ability to express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically.
