The purpose of the Deferred Prosecution Coordinator/Victim Witness is to perform legal assistant, clerical, and deferred prosecution agreement monitoring duties and tasks within the District Attorney’s Office and to assist in the delivery of Victim – Witness Services for the Green County District Attorney’s Office, assist in the preparation and review of legal and court documents for the Green County District Attorney’s Office, complete assigned clerical, administrative and victim-witness tasks within appropriate deadlines and time limits, perform self-directed, program related tasks and exercise independent decision-making under direction of Victim Witness/Office
Coordinator and District Attorney/Assistant District Attorneys. This position performs legal assistant/Deferred Prosecution Agreement duties 55% of their time and Victim-Witness Services 45% of their time.- Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
? Perform legal assistant responsibilities including word processing, data processing of compiled information, general receptionist duties, management of automated court calendaring and office appointment system.
? Monitor Compliance of Defendant’s Deferred Agreements by communicating with offenders, treatment providers, and other criminal justice system partners.
? Review police investigative reports and prepare criminal complaints and summons using automated District Attorney’s Case Management Software.
? Prepare other legal documents and court notices, working cooperatively with Court and Law Enforcement Personnel.
? Work with Crime Victims/Witnesses, while having an interest in and understanding of Victim Dynamics and willingness to learn and apply appropriate techniques for empathizing with and relating to crime victims in a professional manner.
? Communicate effectively with Law Enforcement, Court Personnel, Crime Victims, Witnesses, Defendants, and the public.
? Use word processing computer software, including copiers, telephone, and facsimile machine.
? Assist victims in preparing Victim Impact Statements and Restitution Requests for use by the Court and Prosecutor in sentencing.
? Assess the emotional, physical and financial needs of victims; make appropriate referrals to community resources as needed; orient victims to the Wisconsin Crime Victim Compensation Program and assist with application for benefits when appropriate.
? Provide limited short term counseling or crisis intervention services to victims of crimes.
? Provide escort and assist crime victims and witnesses during their court appearances to answer questions, provide emotional support and to provide information about the criminal court system. Arrange for transportation for court appearances. Escort to a safe, secure waiting area during court
appearances.
? Help witnesses to understand the importance of their role to ensure their cooperation in the criminal case. Provide employer intercession services when requested and seek to resolve any appearance issues to assure witness appearance in court; including but not limited to making travel and hotel arrangements for out-of-town witnesses and law enforcement agencies and notifying same of changes or cancellations of Court dates.
? Assist assigned Prosecutor during court proceedings, as requested, and in preparing witnesses for hearings and trial with special attention to child victims/witnesses and victims of sensitive crimes.
? Act as a liaison between victims and their family members, witnesses of crime, the District Attorney’s Office, the court system, mental health professionals, community agencies, law enforcement agencies and probation and parole officers.
? Develop and maintain effective work and public relations with social service agencies, law enforcement agencies and community organizations to provide coordinated community response to victims of crime. Attend and participate in Child Advocacy Center forensic interviews.
? Implement policies and procedures for the operation of the District Attorney’s Office and Victim/Witness Program.
? Work with sensitive and confidential information.
? Work cooperatively under the direction of District Attorney, Assistant District Attorneys, and Victim Services Coordinator/Office Manager with minimal supervision.
? Additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.- Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to obtain and maintain Wisconsin Victim/Witness Credential within 2 years of hire.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Driver’s License.
Current Notary Public Commission or ability to become a notary public.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the general public, victims, witnesses, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to provide technical assistance, information and administrative support services to victims and witness, law enforcement and court personnel and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
