
Job Summary
Avangrid is looking for an experienced employment and labor attorney to help support the Avangrid People and Organization (P&O) function and assist internal clients with strategic and practical legal advice on a comprehensive range of employment and labor matters. This role will advise P&O and business leaders on various issues, including, but not limited to hiring, employee relations, performance management, accommodations, and compliance with state and federal employment and labor laws. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assisting in responding to agency charges, advising on internal investigations, handling pre-litigation disputes, drafting or advising on employment policies, procedures and agreements, and assisting in proactively mitigating legal risk.
This position will report directly to the Vice President – Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Corporate Secretary of Avangrid.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and practical day-to-day advice and counsel to P&O and business leaders on all aspects of the employment relationship, including, but not limited to hiring and termination issues, discipline, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, employee and labor relations, internal investigations and employee or labor litigation.
- Advise on strategy and represent the company in employment-related disputes, litigation, mediations, and settlements, working with outside counsel, as needed.
- Assists P&O department with negotiation, contract drafting, approval and execution of employment agreements, nondisclosure agreements, separation and severance agreements, and other business contracts.
- Works closely with clients, other in-house counsel, company management, and, in certain matters, outside counsel.
- Assists with governance and compliance efforts, including compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations as well as drafting various corporate and/or employment-related agreements, policies and procedures.
- Supports the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and Senior Counsel (Labor & Employment) and performs other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to the bar of New York or ability to waive into the New York bar, and a minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience.
- Experience in handling employment litigation, responding to agency charges, and day-to-day advising on employment and labor law topics.
- Self-motivated, resourceful, experienced and agile to handle a broad range of employment law and labor relations-related matters, including ability to multitask.
- A good team player, well-organized, and able to identify business-oriented solutions to complex legal problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication, problem solving, analytical, organizational and negotiating skills with demonstrated ability to achieve results.
- Excellent case and project management skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and presents high-quality work.
- Creative mind for finding solutions to complex issues.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as a proven team player, to work, promote and collaborate, including the ability to provide cross-functional support.
