The Legal Project Manager is responsible for supporting the Legal Operations team and the Strategic Pricing team in the implementation of the Husch Blackwell LPM Program Standards. This role will also support LPM technology and provide assistance to attorneys with regard to matter management best practices and tools, including but not limited to scoping work, budgeting, monitoring, developing process and communication plans, and conducting post-project reviews. Essential job functions include:

  • Assist attorneys in defining client value perspective.
  • Identify and evaluate market trends and opportunities with respect to legal service delivery models, cost structures and client service; identify factors affecting our delivery of value on client engagements and propose/coach attorneys on methods to improve.
  • Responsible for the statistical analysis and development of task-based billing trend reports. Work closely with attorneys and the pricing team to propose and implement appropriate fee arrangements based on quantitative data.
  • Direct & coordinate with Practice Specialty Center (PSC) Leaders on the implementation of efficient processes associated with the most commonly-used matter types.
  • Assist PSC leaders in identifying unprofitable matter types and propose solutions for improvement.
  • Collaborate internally and with clients and their support teams to implement processes and address clients’ needs, ensuring a seamless relationship; coordinate the administrative oversight of legal project management initiatives for clients.
  • Organize and conduct client (and client team) LPM meetings, provide documentation and implementation support to achieve defined objectives.
  • Support Client Service Team efforts related to LPM, pricing, process improvement and related client technology.
  • Assist in firmwide LPM training efforts including co-conducting workshops, PSC presentations, Strategic Business Unit (SBU) presentations and client team presentations.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and piloting innovative legal technologies and process enhancements. 
  • Identify opportunities for streamlining the legal service delivery process through technology improvements, business process reengineering or other approaches. Partner with internal support teams to design, build and implement innovative solutions.
  • Lead or participate in change management initiatives to ensure successful adoption of new tools, processes, or client service models. 
  • Supervise ongoing development of client budgets and monthly tracking of actual performance against budgets to assist with internal and external client management.
  • Regularly assist or present to internal groups on legal project management, pricing, profitability, and law firm economics.

 

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Accounting or Finance required; Master’s Degree or Juris Doctorate in related field preferred or commensurate professional and educational experience.
  • 7 years of progressive expertise in related area required.
  • Substantial experience in the area of project management, implementation of project management disciplines, and direct work with partner-level client managers required; experience in an LLP partnership structure strongly preferred.
  • Robust knowledge of legal staffing, budgeting, profit modeling and project management tools required; ability to identify client’s value perspective and assist partners in aligning their legal service delivery to that perspective.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources, apply critical and creative thinking to draw conclusions or develop solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships across multiple levels within an organization.
  • Familiarity with data warehouse extraction and budget platforms required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all Microsoft office products, specifically Excel and MS Project or similar Project Management software.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:

  • State of California: $94,000 - $180,000
  • State of Colorado: $87,000 - $155,000

The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus, however bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed, and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
