Job Description

The attorney will be expected to provide community empowerment legal services and supervise and direct law students providing community empowerment legal services to low-income immigrants in Los Angeles County.

The Law School’s Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic (LIJC) is a community-based collaboration of Loyola Law School, Loyola Marymount University, Homeboy Industries Inc., and Dolores Mission Church. LIJC’s mission is to advance the rights of the immigrant population in East Los Angeles through direct legal services, education, and community empowerment while teaching law students effective immigrants’ rights lawyering skills in a real-world setting. In response to the changing immigration law landscape, the LIJC seeks to add an attorney to our team for one year to expand our capacity to meet the significant increased need for legal services and education expressed by our client community and nonprofit partners.

This attorney will have the opportunity to receive training and mentorship in teaching and supervision of law students, and as a result is an ideal position for an immigration attorney seeking to transition to teaching law in a clinical setting.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities 

 

The position will include the following specific responsibilities/accountabilities: 

 

  • Responsible for working together with the Clinic Director to ensure the effective management of the LIJC and to support LIJC grant fundraising and communications efforts.  
  • Supervise clinic students’ work representing clients and providing know your rights presentations, client consultations and support for pro se immigration matters. 
  • During periods of student absence, the supervising attorney will be entirely or partially responsible for representation of applicable clinic clients. 
  • Develop and conduct immigration legal trainings and workshops of need to the client community. 
  • Attend regular community immigration law consultation clinics. 
  • Co-teach, with the Clinic Director, the required courses of the Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic. 
  • Work with the Clinic Director to build and foster the clinic’s relationships with the community including expanding community partnerships to enable the Clinic to maintain up to date knowledge of the needs of the client community. 
  • Other duties as assigned or requested. 
  • This position is a full time, year-round position located on the Loyola Law School Campus.  This position requires driving to community organizations, workshop locations, court, etc. Some evening and occasional weekend hours will be required.

Requisite Qualifications 

  • Candidates must have a JD Degree and must have been licensed to practice in California for at least two years, as this is a requirement to be able to supervise certified law students.  Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes. 

 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in immigration law representation (will consider relevant law school clinical experience). 

 

  • Ability to mentor, supervise, and train law students in an in-house clinical program.  Prior teaching and/or student supervision experience is preferred.   

 

  • Outstanding lawyering skills 

 

  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral). 

 

  • Candidates should demonstrate tenacity and dedication, and a successful track record of working effectively with diverse and vulnerable client populations, and a demonstrated commitment to the client community served by the LIJC. 

 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills are essential.   

 

  • Professionalism is paramount, including an ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and seek guidance when appropriate. 

 

  • Spanish speaking ability is .
