Job Description

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid seeks one full-time Paralegal A to join the Telephone Access to Justice (TAJ) Team. The TAJ is TRLA’s intake telephone line and where the majority of TRLA’s applications for legal assistance are processed. The primary duty of this position is conducting eligibility and substantive intake interviews by telephone.

The Paralegal A may work out of any of TRLA's Texas offices. This is an in-person position, and regular, on-site attendance is considered an essential function of the role. While TRLA supports flexibility and may allow occasional remote work where appropriate and with prior approval, consistent in-person attendance is expected.

The primary duties and activities of a Paralegal A may include the following and any other case-related activities and duties consistent with assisting attorneys in the practice of law:

  • Conduct eligibility and substantive interviews, which may be in person and by telephone, which interviews may at times take place outside the regular office setting;

  • Provide basic information and referrals to applicants, including those ineligible for services;

  • Interview clients and witnesses;

  • Conduct follow-up of assigned cases, including investigating facts and researching law;

  • Serve process and subpoenas;

  • Prepare legal documents;

  • Oversee legal clinics;

  • Notarize legal documents;

  • Attend and participate in community group meetings and educational forums to conduct intake and make community legal education presentations;

  • Prepare legal educational materials;

  • Translate;

  • Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into client database and other requirements;

  • Obtain eligibility documentation, if required, and enter the eligibility information into the client database.

  • Follow all procedures to ensure that such information is available to the appropriate casehandlers on a timely basis.

  • Prepare administrative reports required by TRLA;

  • Any other duties required by the branch or team manager.

 

Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Proficient at data entry.

  • Possess verbal, reading and writing skills

  • High School degree or equivalent
