Salary Range: $175,000-$190,000 Depending on experience

Position Summary

The General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to Victory Housing, Inc. and its affiliates (“Victory Housing”). This senior leadership role addresses complex and diverse legal matters affecting the organization, its employees, and its communities, ensuring legal compliance and identifying and reducing risk. The General Counsel also serves as Secretary, maintaining corporate records. Areas of guidance include affordable housing, contracts, property, land use, employment, nonprofit organizations, public policy, and related matters. The General Counsel will oversee outside counsel as needed and partner across departments to resolve legal issues.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice to the President & CEO and other corporate officers.
  • Oversee corporate organizational compliance; prepare and steward corporate records and filings.
  • Manage insurance claims, litigation, and disputes (e.g., personal injury, property claims, landlord-tenant, employment).
  • Track, analyze, and respond to inquiries, subpoenas, and records requests in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Partner with departments to provide guidance on legal matters affecting operations.
  • Represent Victory Housing and affiliates in standard transactions and other matters, including:
  • Review, draft, and/or negotiate vendor contracts.
  • Review, draft, and/or negotiate property transaction documents.
  • Review housing authority and similar contracts.
  • Oversee and coordinate outside legal counsel and pro bono partners to ensure effective, efficient support.
  • Research and analyze applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Consult with Archdiocesan attorneys as needed on:
  • Legal issues for 501(c)(3) entities and documents related to tax-exempt status.
  • Legal issues pertaining to Catholic identity, religious freedom, and public policy.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD).
  • Membership in the District of Columbia and Maryland bars.
  • 5–7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Background in real estate, affordable housing, finance, property, contracts, and/or landlord/tenant law.
  • Familiarity with theology, canon law, and/or nonprofit law is a plus.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to:
  • Provide clear, succinct oral and written legal guidance.
  • Work cooperatively within a team environment.
  • Effectively supervise and manage support staff as needed.
