Job Focus Area
The Louisiana Department of Education attorneys primarily provide advice and conduct legal research for Department staff. Attorneys may also represent the Department before administrative and judicial tribunals, make presentations to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), the legislature and at other public meetings; provide assistance, information and training to Local Education Agencies (LEAs), community resource partners and the public; perform necessary activity in processing of complaints filed against local school districts, charter schools or public education agencies pursuant to IDEA, LDOE’s IDEA implementation regulations or Children with Exceptionalities laws and perform other duties in the interest of school children in public elementary and secondary education. All attorneys may be assigned duties in various areas of law including: Civil Service, contracts, education funding, elementary and secondary education including general and special education, employment, food and nutrition programs, governmental ethics, procurement, public records, student discipline, teacher assessment and certifications, testing and accountability, transportation and early Learning Center operations. - Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Job Duties:
As an Attorney 1 in the Louisiana Department of Education legal division, you will:- Be assigned cases by the Supervisory Attorney for purposes of formal complaint investigation procedures under the supervisory jurisdiction and authority of the department to investigate allegations that a school district, charter school, or public education agency is violating a requirement of Part B of the IDEAA, the LDOE’s IDEA implementing regulations, or Children with Exceptionalities laws.
- Assist the legal division of the LDOE with preparation of written findings and review of other staff written findings based on such investigations.
- Provide the Department of Education with legal advice and support relative to special education matters and developments and education of students with exceptionalities as needed.
Appointment Type: Job Appointment. This Position will be filled as a temporary job appointment that may last up to 4 years. The person hired for this position is expected to regularly report to the Baton Rouge office.
Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.
Work Schedule: Work days are Monday - Friday; work hours will be determined.
Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
