The Role: 

TIME is seeking an experienced attorney with expertise in intellectual property, privacy, technology, AI, licensing and compliance. We are looking for someone with strong transactional skills, a media/IP or tech background, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. You will collaborate closely with the other members of the TIME Legal Department and be a trusted partner to executives and staff across every part of the organization. This is a full-time position based in TIME’s New York City office, with flexible in-office requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of agreements for all internal client groups, including contracts relating to technology, AI, ad tech and SaaS, as well as contracts for sourcing/vendors and other commercial arrangements
  • Provide legal advice on a range of compliance issues, regulations and industry standards, with a focus on privacy (GDPR, COPPA, CCPA/CPRA), consumer protection, data security and intellectual property
  • Draft company policies, and establish and lead internal processes for compliance and training, as well as draft and manage the implementation of user facing policies, such as terms of use, privacy policies and consumer disclosures
  • Advise executives and staff across the organization on day-to-day legal issues and needs as they arise
  • Handle legal work for international licensing program and other content/trademark licensing
  • Support other members of the Legal Department and Business/Legal Affairs team on advertising, marketing, events and TIME Studios matters
  • Assist with legal operations matters, including establishing processes and systems for contract administration and rights management
  • Assist with prosecution and enforcement of worldwide trademark portfolio

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree; a member of the New York Bar in good standing
  • 6+ years of post-J.D. experience, with at least 3+ years of relevant legal experience in media, IP and/or tech
  • Strong knowledge of US and international data privacy laws and principles, and significant product and privacy and data security counseling experience
  • Excellent drafting, negotiating and communication skills, and extensive experience with contracts, particularly in the areas of technology, licensing and intellectual property
  • Demonstrated experience providing practical, actionable advice that balances legal risk and business impact
  • Strong interpersonal skills and collegial attitude; must have the ability to multi-task and to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to balance challenging priorities and lead multiple projects simultaneously under deadline pressure

Location:

This is a hybrid role. Eligible candidates for the role must be within a commutable distance of TIME’s New York City office upon hire and may be expected to be physically present as needed (typically 3 days/week).
