Job Description
Legal Aid of Western Missouri seeks a full-time paralegal in its new Independence office. This position will assist Legal Aid clients with issues relating to public benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. This position will also provide general paralegal and front desk support in the Independence office. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, screen and interview clients; communicating with various outside entities; perform outreach duties as assigned; assisting attorneys in case work; and other duties and special projects as assigned. This position will support both urban and rural counties and may include some daytime travel within Legal Aid’s service area.
The qualified candidate must have the following:
- Two-to-four-year degree or substantial related legal experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of legal terminology and legal communications principles and practices.
- Familiarity of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Desire to assist in the delivery of high-quality legal assistance to low income people with domestic relations problems.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working in civil litigation, benefits and/or guardianships.
- Ability to speak a second language, preferred, but not required.
Salary: $24.35/hour + DOE
