Join Our Team as a Medicolegal Investigator – Make a Real Impact in Uncovering the Truth

Are you detail-oriented, curious, and committed to helping bring clarity to challenging situations?  The Department of the Medical Examiner is seeking to fill a Medicolegal Investigator I position in Honolulu.  As a Medicolegal Investigator I, you will play a vital role in investigating deaths that are accidental, unexplained, or unattended, helping to uncover the facts and provide answers to families and the community. This entry-level position is perfect for someone eager to learn and grow in a hands-on investigative environment.

What You Will Do:
  • Learn and assist with medicolegal death investigations under experienced investigators.
  • Help gather evidence by attending scenes, photographing, and interviewing witnesses.
  • Assist in identifying deceased individuals and recovering their personal belongings.
  • Review medical records and prepare clear reports on your findings.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to challenging scenes including sights and odors related to death investigations.
  • Work may involve irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Career Progression
The expectation for any Medicolegal Investigator I in the Department of the Medical Examiner is to learn and progress upward to higher Medicolegal Investigator levels. A Medicolegal Investigator may progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher level positions with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.  


Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.  Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field. 


The education requirement must be met at the time of application.  Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.
