Immigration Attorney (Community Law)

Community Law (CL) is the civil law division of MPD. CL was formed in 2016 in response to the growing concerns related to the collateral consequences of being justice involved and the disproportionate number of people of color suffering under these consequences. CL has both a civil law and an immigration law team. CL’s specialty is diminishing the downstream effects of criminal justice system involvement. We represent people from the community who have previously encountered the criminal justice system, as well as other vulnerable and underserved populations in Portland and Multnomah County, to remove barriers to housing and economic stability. We also advocate for systemic changes to help Oregonians previously involved in the criminal justice system. Our model is designed upon partnering with local government agencies and community-based organizations to serve our clients, working together to help clients remove barriers to economic opportunities, navigate legal systems, and achieve justice.

MPD is currently searching for an Immigration Attorney to join our Community Law Team.

The immigration attorney’s responsibilities will include offering consultations to individuals and identifying potential immigration benefits, managing an individual caseload providing culturally responsive direct representation in affirmative and defensive immigration matters, and assisting with immigration applications before USCIS and EOIR, including but not limited to Asylum, Cancellation of Removal, Adjustment of Status, Employment Authorization, Citizenship, VAWA, and U-visas. The attorney may have to offer Padilla advice to MPD’s criminal defense attorneys as needed and provide crimmigration analyses to local immigration legal nonprofits as needed. The immigration attorney may also participate in collaborations with local government initiatives and other immigrants’ rights organizations. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to immigrants’ rights and a dedication to address systemic injustices within the immigration system and providing zealous advocacy for low-income clients.

This position pays $74,825.00 - $90,950.26 per year commensurate with experience and additional compensation for bilingual ability. Staff are members of a union. This is a full-time, exempt position.  All Community Law positions are contingent upon continued funding.

• 4 Mental Health Days per year 
• Sick Leave – 48 hours upon hire + accrues monthly after the completion of six months of employment

Qualifications:

• Oregon bar admission or eligible for admission
• Fluency in Spanish
• Experience handling removal defense cases
• Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse clients, communities, and colleagues
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferences:

• Prior experience in nonprofit legal services 
• Three or more years of immigration law experience
• Experience representing low-income clients, and diverse cultural, geographic, and economic backgrounds, including individuals with a history of incarceration or trauma
• Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team

Work Environment:

• This is a hybrid position which requires in-person appearances in Portland Immigration Court and interviews at the Portland USCIS Field Office Circuit Court.   All staff have the option to work in our downtown Portland office.

• Applicants must reside in Oregon or be willing to relocate for the position

• Attorneys work 40 hours per week and possess a willingness to work occasional irregular hours to meet the needs of clients
