Job Description

The City of Crystal Lake is recruiting for a Part-Time Legal and Transparency Compliance Coordinator (28 hours/week) working within the Police Department. 

The nature of the work performed requires a professional manner with the public and City and department staff. Work requires the exercise of considerable judgment, initiative, and discretion. A high level of integrity in dealing with confidential and sensitive information is essential.  

The responsibilities listed below are performed under the direction of the Records Supervisor:

  • Receive and process Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests submitted to the police department
  • Review requests to determine if records are subject to disclosure under FOIA laws and departmental policies
  • Search for and gather responsive records from relevant divisions or personnel within the department
  • Redact written, video, and audio records as required by law
  • Prepare official responses to requesters, including approval, partial denial, or full denial letters
  • Track and log all incoming requests, deadlines, and fees in accordance with state FOIA timelines and requirements
  • Coordinate with the department’s legal counsel on complex or sensitive requests to ensure compliance and minimize liability
  • Calculate and assess fees for search, duplication or review as permitted by statute
  • Ensure timely compliance with statutory deadlines and maintain accurate records of extensions or delays
  • Work closely with the police divisions (records, investigations, administration, etc.) to locate requested information
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive law enforcement information

The successful candidate must have strong technical and video editing experience, strong organizational skills and a solid understanding of computer programs used for technical applications. The candidate will also be able to work both in a team setting and independently.  

Qualifications for this position include a high school diploma or equivalent, a minimum of one-year relevant experience in municipal government, or related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills. 

The position is part-time, scheduled for 28 hours per week. Hours are flexible and must fall between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is an on-site position and there is no opportunity for remote work.

The anticipated starting salary is $29.46/hour. The full salary range for this position is $29.46-$42.43.
