About the Position

commUnity+ Legal is a generalist community legal centre providing free legal services to diverse communities experiencing disadvantage across the Western suburbs of Melbourne.

Under the direction of the Manager/Principal Lawyer, the primary role of the Generalist Lead Lawyer is to supervise and provide day to day management of a team of solicitors in the delivery of legal advice, assistance and casework, high-level stakeholder relationships and partnerships, and ensuring the work integrates with the organisation’s strategic goals. This role leads one of two teams of solicitors within the practice to deliver high quality legal assistance.

This position is a hybrid role and primarily based at the commUnity+ St Albans office, however the role may require attendance at other locations from time to time. This is a full-time (38 hours per week) / part-time (negotiable) role, for a parental leave cover position for a fixed term of 6 months.

Key Selection Criteria

•     Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor and a current Victorian Legal Practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain the same) including High Court registration

•     A minimum of 5 years’ experience in advice and casework in the areas of family, criminal and civil law and prior legal practice experience in a community legal or legal aid context with substantial experience in litigation and  representation

•     Demonstrated capacity to provide strong and effective management, leadership, mentoring and supervision to a small team and support a cohesive team environment

•     Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a high-pressure environment, managing competing demands, tight deadlines and respond to a dynamic work environment

•     Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills and a passion for stakeholder engagement.

•     Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, with the ability to generate correspondence and manage communications independently

•     Demonstrated advanced negotiation skills

Additionally, experience in a leadership role in a Community Legal Centre or other community-based legal practice supporting clients experiencing vulnerability and marginalisation will be highly regarded.

A current Driver’s License and the ability to travel between offices and outreach locations is essential for this role. Additionally, a Working with Children Check and National Police Check with ongoing validity are mandatory for this role.
