GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  


This is a grant-funded position - Victim Services Advocates are professionals trained to support victims of crime. Advocates offer victims information, emotional support, and help to find resources and fill out paperwork along with attending court hearings, tracking cases and keeping statistics, meeting with attorneys and victims before trials and/or hearings, attending meetings with outside agencies for collaborative purposes and interacting on a daily basis with these same outside agencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

 
  • Educates individuals, staff, guardians, and community members.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate reporting systems.
  • Informs victims about their constitutional and statutory mandated victim's rights, as they pertain to the Criminal Justice System.
  • Refers victims to the appropriate agencies to secure Orders of Protection and Injunctions Against Harassment.
  • Assists in preparing victims and witnesses to testify at court hearings, explaining court process and proceedings, and advising them of the progress of their case.
  • Accompanies and provides courtroom support for victims and/or witnesses.
  • Explains court rulings, processes property release forms, and provides victims with appropriate referrals to follow-up services after sentencing.
  • Provides case status and criminal justice information to victims and/or witnesses.
  • Enters and maintains pertinent data and statistical records on victims served and services provided into designated computer systems/software programs.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact and works with a variety of sources to attempt collection of money paid from the crime victim's compensation fund.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing annual conferences including managing the contracts associated with the conference.
  • Advocates for rights and quality of care of individuals.
  • Attended meetings with teams of individuals served as needed to protect rights and improve the quality of life.
  • Participates with/ advises and provides direction regarding rights issues in all areas of the agency's business.
  • Reviews practices to maintain compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Participates in the development of policies, procedures, rules, and law-making.

Qualifications


PREFERENCES: 


Experience working within the criminal justice system
Experience working in the public sector
Experience working with victims of crime


KNOWLEDGE: 

 

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, including child and adult protection, licensure and agency statutes.
  • Knowledge of the specialized needs of individuals with disabilities, including people with intellectual disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and mental illness.
  • Knowledge of client Rights and advocacy issues.
  • Knowledge of court procedures, crisis investigation, and testimony in court.
  • Knowledge of issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and available community resources.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Social Services)
  
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Victim Services) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Client Services Advocate
 
OR
 
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Victim Services) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Client Services Advocate
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
None

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

  • This position may require a background information check INCLUDING the taking of fingerprints, which will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, The Department of Family Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for every successful applicant.
