Position: CHIEF DEPUTY STAFF ATTORNEY II
Salary Range: JSP 16 – $192,048 - $207,500 per annum in Chicago

Position Overview:

The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit invites applications for the position of Chief Deputy Staff Attorney II to work under the direction of the Senior Staff Attorney to lead the office. The Chief Deputy oversees the Supervisory Staff Attorneys to supervise, train, and hire the staff attorneys. Staff attorneys work directly work directly with all the judges of the court, assisting them with research and the disposition of appeals in much of the same way as the judges’ personal law clerks.
Duties:

•Advises and assists the Senior Staff Attorney in office operations, budget, and resource allocations.
•Oversee the day-to-day operations of the office by providing leadership to staff through coaching, mentoring, and feedback.
•Reviews briefs, assigns work, and edits the work of staff law clerks. Drafts memoranda, opinions and orders in a wide range of civil and criminal matters.
•Monitor and reports on legal developments
•Responds to questions from judges, law clerks, judicial assistants, clerk's office personnel and other court employees.
•Participate in the recruitment, hiring, training, and selection of supervisors and staff law clerks
•Schedules case-related events for staff and judges.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants must (1) have a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-approved law school. Membership in good standing in the bar of a state, a U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia. (Membership need not be active.) At least seven years of experience in the practice of law, legal research and writing, or legal administration, and at least three years of substantial managerial or supervisory responsibility. Expertise in federal appellate, civil, and criminal procedure, as well as significant understanding of relevant federal substantive law. Superior analytical, research, writing, editing, and oral communication skills. Outstanding interpersonal, collaborative, and leadership abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant experience in a federal court or government agency. Specialized education or training in court administration or operations.
