Job Duties
Virginia Tax is seeking an experienced policy and legal professional to serve as the Assistant Commissioner of Legal Affairs. This position serves on the agency's executive leadership team and will provide leadership, direction, and oversight for the Tax Adjudication, Disclosure, and Local Property Tax Divisions.
Serving in this role, you will…
- Direct and oversee the agency's sales, income and local tax appeals processes
- Provide leadership and oversight of the agency's disclosure, safeguarding and records management functions
- Lead and support the local tax advisory functions of the agency
- Support direct reports in their career growth and the development of their teams
- Ensure that office operations comport with the agency’s strategic plan
- Serve as the agency’s liaison to the Office of the Attorney General, including coordinating with the operational areas of the agency that interact with the OAG
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule with 1 day remote and 4 days in office per week.
This position is located at our Main Street Center office in Richmond, Virginia.
The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of and experience applying federal, state, and local tax law
- Executive level leadership, supervisory experience, and knowledge of management principles and practices
- Experience advising senior leadership on legal matters
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal and technical tax issues in a clear and concise manner
- Knowledge and experience with tax litigation and/or tax appeals
Additional Considerations
- Experience managing a tax controversy function within a state or federal agency
- Active Bar license in Virginia or another state strongly preferred
- Experience with tax disclosure, IRS safeguarding procedures, and record retention matters
- Experience advising on local property tax matters
