GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Malheur County District Attorney’s office is recruiting for the position of Victim Advocate. This is a grant funded position. The Victim Assistance program serves all victims of crime in Malheur County. The caseload focus of this particular position will be assisting adult victims of domestic violence and sexual assault crimes; however, cross training will be required to assist victims of all types of crime. This position requires assuming a rotating, 24-hour on-call shift and MAY necessitate a response to the local hospital as needed. The 24-hour on-call shift may also require assisting law enforcement to make referrals to local non-profit agencies as needed. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the immediate supervision of the Director of Victim Services, who periodically reviews performance for adherence to the appropriate policies and standards. This position works under the general supervision of the Office Manager and District Attorney.
 

Essential Functions

EXAMPLE OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(Please note that the following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management). This position would assist victims of crime by ensuring victims are knowledgeable of and have access to all services available through the Malheur County District Attorney’s Victim Assistance Program by:
- Advising victims of their rights as mandated by law
-Maintaining confidentiality.
-  Accompanying victims to court appearances or attending on their behalf as requested
-Providing support in the grand jury and trial process
- Referring victims to community partners or programs for assistance
-Assisting in the completion of applications and forms
-Providing information about and assisting with Stalking, Sexual Abuse, Family Abuse, and Elder Abuse Protection Orders.
-Acting as a liaison between victim, prosecutor, and court.
-Accurately and concisely documenting all activities in the district attorney case management system.
-Coordinating and assisting Attorneys with victim/witness trial preparation.
- Providing logistical support and assistance to the victim during the judicial process.
- Regular physical attendance at the employer’s facility is required.
 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 
High school graduate or equivalent, preferably supplemented by college-level coursework in social sciences related fields and/or law enforcement; social services or community advocacy-type work, or a satisfactory combination of experience and training. Minimum age of 21. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Necessary special requirements: 
Possession of a valid drivers' license with a good driving record and dependable transportation. Must have an adequate telephone contact with either a home phone or cell phone.
Guidelines: 
All work is performed within departmental policy and procedure; Federal, State and County rules, regulations, ordinances, and personnel policies. Employee will use good judgment and initiative. The District Attorney or the Director of Victim Services is available for interpretation in unusual situations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, skills and abilities required by this position: 
Knowledge of: Basic computer skills; modern office practices and procedures including answering multi-line telephones, using fax and copy machines.
Skills in: Interacting with people under stressful conditions, maintaining organization in daily work, communication, empathy, listening, and public speaking; computer software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel; the ability to quickly learn how to navigate the District Attorney's Office case management system.
Ability to: Communicate effectively and appropriately both orally and in writing; exercise mature judgment and react professionally in emergency and stressful situations; deal effectively and tactfully with the public, law enforcement personnel and community resource agencies; maintain confidentiality in all matters; deal with victims of crime compassionately and with concern; demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural/ethnic diversity of the service population and the needs of special populations; taking initiative and being able to work independently.
