Provides paralegal support for Data Privacy & Identity Theft Unit attorneys for litigation matters and pre-suit investigations. Reports to Assistant Section Chief of Data Privacy & Identity Theft Unit.
Primary Subject Matter of Cases
- Privacy violations, including HIPAA and Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act
- Data breaches involving personal information
- Telephone privacy issues including robocalling
- Identity theft, fraud, and credit reporting
- Abandoned records
- Age verification for adult websites
- Examples of Duties
- Provides paralegal support to attorneys for litigation matters in state and federal court, including managing case schedules, drafting court filings and discovery as appropriate, completing electronic court filings, and reviewing and analyzing discovery responses including document review.
- Provides paralegal support to attorneys for pre-suit investigations, including assisting attorneys with evidence gathering, preparing correspondence, drafting civil investigative demands and subpoenas, and contacting investigative targets and witnesses.
- Collects and organizes evidence supporting court filings and investigative findings.
- Assists attorneys with preparing for sworn statements, depositions, hearings, and trials, including preparing exhibits and binders.
- Supports attorneys during sworn statements, depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Schedules sworn statements, depositions, and meetings for attorneys as needed.
- Organizes and maintains accurate and up-to-date case files.
- Manages e-discovery databases including uploads, productions, coding, and archiving.
- Performs legal and factual research as needed.
- Reviews and applies relevant trial rules and local rules in litigation matters.
- Communicates with other governmental entities, witnesses, court personnel, and opposing counsel.
- Assists Section Chief and Assistant Section Chief with internal reporting as required.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned by attorneys.
- Typical Skills and Qualifications
- Paralegal degree or equivalent work experience.
- Familiarity with civil litigation process including discovery and trial preferred.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys and other staff.
- Proficient computer skills required, including but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, e-discovery software, and other case management tools.
- Ability to balance and manage a high volume of cases and files and handle multiple assignments of varied type and difficulty on an ongoing basis.
- Sensitivity and awareness of public relations and political implications of high-profile cases.
- Adherence to highest standards of ethical conduct, including need for confidentiality.
