Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Chief Counsel, located in Miami, FL.
Duties This position is with the Office of Associate Chief Counsel located in Miami, FL. The Office of Chief Counsel is one of the Government's largest and oldest legal offices. OCC attorneys work on cutting-edge legal issues and provide critical advice across the CBP portfolio, including trade enforcement, search and seizure, immigration, and government ethics. They also represent the agency in labor and employment matters and provide litigation support to the Department of Justice. This position starts at a salary of $78,745.00 (GS-11, Step 1) to $172,414.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $172,414 (GS-14, Step 10). In this position, you will become a key member of the legal team of The Office of The Chief Counsel. Typical work assignments include: Provides legal advice to, and legal representation of, CBP officers in matters relating to the activities and functions of Customs and Border Protection (CBP); Performs legal research into laws, regulations, decisions, and other precedents bearing on legal issues involving CBP to included Customs and Immigration laws; Provides ethics advice, represents CBP in various third party administrative hearings on matters such as employee discipline, contract arbitration, broker license revocation, and adverse actions; prepares litigation reports, affidavits and other documents to assist the Department of Justice in civil actions involving CBP; Prepares legal memoranda and proposing legislation for CBP; examining petitions related to civil penalties and forfeiture of assets; provides current information to the field concerning significant changes occurring in laws and procedures which may affect the operations of CBP; and Formulates decisions and judgments with reference to resolving claims for and against the government arising out of operations of CBP.
