Under the supervision of the Public Defender, provides technical audiovisual support, receives and processes law enforcement body worn camera recordings, audiovisual and photographic evidence. Assists attorneys with cataloging and reviewing of video and audio evidence, IT projects, and investigations as necessary to support the legal representation of clients. Under attorney direction, investigator assists with the processing of audiovisual files received as part of the discovery process and otherwise conducts investigations that would inform such representation.
This is a full-time, benefited position working out of the Holland or Grand Haven Public Defender Office (location to be determined). Typical working hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.- Essential Job Functions
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conducts investigations to obtain evidence for clients of Ottawa County Office of the Public Defender attorneys.
- Supports legal defense for both felony and misdemeanor cases.
- Provides technical audiovisual services to Public Defender attorneys or staff.
- Reviews audio/video recordings for evidentiary value to a criminal case.
- Reviews audio/video recordings for use in criminal cases for courtroom presentation, copying and storage.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems relating to Public Defender attorneys' use of audio/video recordings in representation of their clients.
- Attends trainings on use of audio/video materials. Audio/video materials includes but is not limited to squad car video, body-worn camera recordings, retail store proceedings, private security recordings, and cell phone recordings.
- Assesses audio/video editing and presentation software. Makes recommendations to Public Defender as necessary to improve operations and assist in client representation.
- Assists with the setup and operation of audiovisual equipment.
- Develops documentation for procedures and methods for OPD processing and storage of evidence.
- Assists Public Defender attorneys and office staff with the operation of audio/video software.
- Works in cooperation with the Public Defender and IT on ongoing IT related projects.
- Completes special projects, assignments or other functions as directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Required Education, Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, sociology, legal studies or other relevant field combined with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in criminal justice investigations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Additional Requirements and Information
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Thorough working knowledge of criminal investigations, or in law enforcement with a focus on investigations.
- Familiarity with investigation techniques and tools (such as databases, informational resources and public records), general concepts of criminal law, and arrest procedures.
- Good working knowledge of audio/video recording formats, file conversion, and software used for audio/video playback, redaction, and editing.
- Working knowledge of PC hardware, operating systems, software and related equipment, audio/visual equipment and controls.
- Must be licensed with the state of Michigan and provide valid proof.
- Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Skill in working effectively with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience in evidence handling; establishing and maintaining chain of custody.
- Skill in prioritizing multiple time sensitive assignments.
- Experience in field interviews of diverse citizens.
- Familiarity with testifying under oath in a courtroom setting.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a normal office environment and in the courtroom.
