Job Summary
The Associate General Counsel – West Regulatory will lead the legal support for regulatory matters for the AEP utilities and transmission companies in AEP’s western footprint at the state level, including (1) supervising and developing the team of regulatory counsel representing AEP’s operating companies in state regulatory matters; (2) representation of operating companies before state commissions in in collaboration with local AEP counsel; (3) providing counseling and advice on matters involving state policy and regulation; (4) providing counseling and advice on corporate initiatives involving regulatory issues; (5) collaboration with attorneys who represent AEP’s operating companies, Electric Transmission Texas (ETT) and Transcos in AEP's western jurisdictions; (6) developing and implementing legal and regulatory strategies to produce more consistently successful outcomes in regulatory cases throughout AEP’s state jurisdictions; (7) providing counseling and advice on matters related to ERCOT and associated PUCT rule makings.Applicants must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge of regulatory law in west jurisdictions, and sound legal judgment, as well as a proven ability for initiative, creativity, good judgment and work collaboratively with other attorneys and business partners.
Exercise independent legal judgment, provide direct legal advice, support, research and opinions to senior management and appropriate staff personnel on issues such as corporate and securities, environmental, tax, real estate, energy delivery and wholesale/energy services matters. Consult with and advise staff of these issues as necessary.
Job Description
What You'll Do:
- Assist General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel manage the legal services necessary to provide timely and appropriate legal advice regarding the legal interests of the Company.
- Review, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations, and judicial and administrative decisions and other legal materials affecting matters relating to Company operations and interests.
- Manage outside counsel on matters affecting Company operations and interests.
- Review proposed legislation and regulations; provide significant input in the formulation of the Company's position through preparation of documents, position papers, opinions, briefs and amended language to support or oppose legislation and regulations.
- Represent AEP before courts, agencies, and other regulatory bodies in order to protect and advance the legal interests of the Company.
- Align work with the goals of the AEP Legal Department; work with other in-house and outside counsel on legal matters; participate in the management of outside legal resources as necessary.
- Promote and initiate teamwork; possess a comprehensive knowledge of different disciplines' network channels, both internal and external to the company; build relationships to get things accomplished; provide prompt and concise customer service.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of the company's competitive positions, goals, and objectives and how legal decisions impact the business units; able to provide legal services to minimize liability and reduce legal risk, while supporting the business units' profit incentives and efforts to attract new business.
- Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the Company's Corporate Compliance Policy.
- Promote and enforce the Company's Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Licensed and in good standing and/or eligible to practice law in Texas
Experience:
This position can be hired at a Grade 12 or Grade 13:
Compensation Range:
Associate General Counsel - Grade 12: $179,444 - $233,275
Associate General Counsel - Grade 13: $210,822 - $274,066
