SALARY: The salary range for this position is $103,395.99 to $160,053.17. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater.

The Supreme Court of New Jersey is looking for an experienced attorney who will contribute to the attorney disciplinary and regulatory systems by supporting the Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics (ACPE), Committee on Attorney Advertising (CAA), and the Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPLC).- The ACPE accepts inquiries from members of the bar concerning proper conduct for a member of the legal profession under the Rules of Professional Conduct. R. 1:19-1 et seq.
- The CAA imposes discipline on attorneys for violation of the attorney advertising rules (RPC 7.1 through RPC 7.5) and issues advisory opinions regarding attorney advertising. R. 1:19A-1 et seq. The CAA initiates ethics prosecutions by referring matters to the Office of Attorney Ethics.
- The UPLC reviews grievances regarding unauthorized practice of law and issues advisory opinions. R. 1:22-1 et seq.
This individual will provide staff support, research, and expertise to each of those Committees, including through the intake of inquiries and grievances, communicating with attorneys regarding matters before the Committees, supporting volunteers in their investigations, and drafting proposed responses and opinions for review by the Committee members. This individual also answers the attorney ethics hotline, which attorneys may call for guidance about the Rules of Professional Conduct. Under the supervision of the Clerk of Court, this individual will collaborate with other internal experts and stakeholders within the attorney disciplinary and regulatory systems to collaborate on policy matters concerning the admission to and regulation of the practice of law in New Jersey.REMOTE WORK: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.
- Example of Duties
- Timely intake inquiries, acknowledge receipt, and route materials for proper handing
- Draft cover memoranda describing the facts and relevant caselaw, Committee opinions, or Court Rules pertaining to the legal analysis
- Conduct in-depth research on nuanced issues of attorney discipline and the practice of law
- Craft agendas, prepare meeting minutes, and draft formal opinions and informal responses to inquiries for the Committees’ review, comment, and/or adoption
- Make referrals to the Office of Attorney Ethics and/or law enforcement in appropriate circumstances
- Review legal service plans, which must be registered annually with the Supreme Court pursuant to Rule of Professional Conduct 7.3(e)(4)(vii). Assess compliance with the Rule, maintain accurate records, and post a list of plans on the Judiciary website
- Maintain the omnibus Court Rules governing attorney discipline for posting to the Judiciary website
- Monitor the attorney ethics hotline and respond to attorneys seeking guidance about the Rules of Professional Conduct, R. 1:19-9 (roughly 5-10 inquiries per day)
- Give lectures and other professional presentations on various topics in attorney ethics, advertising, and regulation
- Assist all colleagues in the attorney and disciplinary systems, and provide support to the Clerk and Supreme Court on issues involving the practice of law in New Jersey
- Staff working groups and similar ad hoc committees as assigned
- Other tasks as assigned
Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.- Qualifications
- Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and five years of professional administrative and/or program management experience which shall have included practice of law as an attorney; and three years of supervision of staff.
License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.Supervision Substitution for Level 2B Only - Attorney at law preference
For positions that require or prefer the selected candidate be an Attorney-at-Law, the supervision of staff requirement may be waived for those candidates who are Attorneys-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active; that have at least three years of experience applicable to the position to which they are applying.

- Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.

Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
