About You:
The Associate City Attorney provides a broad range of legal services to the City of Raleigh in a dynamic in-house law office settling. Initially, the attorney will assist other attorneys in the Raleigh City Attorney's Office with matters at all levels of City operations. As the attorney gains experience, the scope and complexity of their independent work will increase. This role involves providing formal and informal legal opinions and drafting a variety of documents, ranging from low to high complexity. The Associate City Attorney may assist with or handle a variety of litigation and may assist in any practice area within the Office. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in municipal law and public service, the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic law office setting, and a willingness to learn new practice areas.
We are seeking a candidate with a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and eligibility to practice law in North Carolina by the start date. While relevant experience is helpful, it is not required. An emphasis or interest in areas of law relevant to municipal practice is preferred. The candidate should possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret laws, rulings, and regulations effectively and be willing to handle diverse projects and assist in various areas of law.

- Provides support to more senior attorneys on projects, departmental assignments, and administrative tasks
- Researches a variety of legal issues and provides legal advice and direction to City representatives
- Reviews and drafts contracts, documents, ordinances, and city regulations
- Assists other attorneys in litigating complex matters in State and federal court and before various agencies.
- Reviews, processes, and assists in the defense of claims made against the City or its officials or employees and in enforcing City Code requirements
- May assist in the City's acquisition of property interests pursuant to the City's power of eminent domain and may litigate or assist others in litigating condemnation claims
- Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Juris Doctorate degree (J.D.) or equivalent required with graduation from an accredited school of law.
Licensing and Certifications:- Eligibility to practice law in North Carolina is required by the employment start date
- Admission before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina is required after the hire date

- Proficiency in utilizing Word processing software as well as competent use of legal research software such as Westlaw
- Strong oral communication, interpersonal, and written communication skills to accurately relay critical legal information

Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Working Conditions:
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
