AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, Lilly Endowment and approximately 60 other funding sources.

LOCATION: This position is located in the Indianapolis office of Indiana Legal Services. There may be opportunities for working a hybrid remote work schedule.
JOB SUMMARY: The staff attorney is part of the Indianapolis office’s Basic Needs Team and will serve victims and survivors of domestic violence in family law and other civil cases in county courts in central and eastern Indiana. The staff attorney will be a primary case-handler and will collaborate with the team’s other attorneys, paralegals, and social workers to provide quality, trauma-informed representation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Evaluate new cases and make client acceptance decisions.
- Provide a range of legal services to survivors of domestic violence in divorce, custody, paternity, guardianship, protective order, and other civil cases in ILS’s 17-county Indianapolis service area.
- Appropriately delegate and supervise legal work conducted by support staff and volunteers.
- Work with the Project’s social worker to meet clients’ non-legal needs and services.
- Maintain and build upon ILS’s network of community partnerships with domestic violence service providers and other community organizations.
- Travel within the State of Indiana to attend hearings and conduct community outreach.
- Collaborate with community partners and other agencies.
- Comply with all LSC and grant requirements and all ILS policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Dedicated to the mission of Indiana Legal Services, which is to use the law to fight poverty and racism, empower clients, and improve access to justice.
- A license to practice law in Indiana and a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Applicants licensed to practice law in other jurisdictions and actively seeking Indiana licensure will be considered.
- A demonstrated commitment to racial equity, social and economic justice, and serving disadvantaged populations.
- Demonstrated interest in serving survivors of domestic violence. One to three years of legal experience serving victims of domestic violence is preferred but not required.
- Willingness to incorporate a trauma-informed approach into a legal practice and to provide compassionate, client-centered legal services to individuals experiencing addiction, mental health struggles, and extreme poverty.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to balance multiple projects and responsibilities.
- A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel as needed to perform the responsibilities of the position.
- Spanish or other language proficiency is preferred.
COMPENSATION: The starting salary for the position is $57,425 with a range up to a maximum of $75,535 depending on experience.
