CGI is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented attorney with a strong intellectual property (IP) background to support and help lead CGI’s Global IP protection program. This role will play a central part in shaping and advancing CGI’s legal strategy related to intellectual property, artificial intelligence (AI), and other emerging technologies.
This position offers significant autonomy in day-to-day operations while providing meaningful collaboration with a geographically diverse and highly experienced U.S. legal team. The selected candidate will work closely with U.S. legal counsel, senior-level contracts professionals and other executives and will collaborate with outside counsel and global legal colleagues across CGI.
In addition to core IP responsibilities, this role will serve as a key legal leader in developing governance frameworks, risk management strategies, and best practices for AI-enabled solutions and evolving technology offerings. The position will help drive legal strategy and proactive guidance in support of CGI’s innovation initiatives and digital transformation efforts.
CGI will consider candidates proximate to any US office with a preference for Fairfax VA, Lafayette LA, Knoxville TN, Denver CO, Philadelphia PA or Pittsburgh PA. CGI utilizes a hybrid model and partners should be prepared to work in a local CGI office, as needed.
Intellectual Property Strategy & Management
• Lead and support CGI’s Global IP protection strategy, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets.
• Conduct preliminary trademark clearance searches; review and assess comprehensive trademark searches; file and prosecute trademark applications; manage renewals and maintenance of global trademark registrations; and oversee external trademark counsel.
• Manage external counsel in connection with patent filing and prosecution.
• Provide copyright guidance and prosecute copyright applications.
• Support and coordinate IP enforcement matters and litigation involving CGI IP in collaboration with outside counsel.
• Support IP-related due diligence activities for mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions.
• Maintain and enhance CGI’s corporate IP protection policies and guidelines.
AI, Emerging Technology & Innovation Leadership
• Serve as the U.S. legal lead for AI, IP, and emerging technology matters.
• Support the legal team on IP, AI, and emerging-technology legal matters, including contract reviews and negotiations for vendor and client engagements, as needed.
• Advise on legal and risk considerations related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI, automation tools, data usage, and other evolving technologies.
• Develop and implement governance frameworks, internal policies, and best practices related to AI development, procurement, deployment, and use.
• Partner with business and technology teams to support innovation initiatives while ensuring appropriate IP protection, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation.
• Monitor evolving legal and regulatory developments in AI, data governance, and technology law, and proactively advise stakeholders on business impacts.
• Collaborate with global legal colleagues to align on enterprise-wide AI and emerging technology strategies.
Open Source & Technology Advisory
• Review and advise product and engineering teams on open-source software licenses and associated compliance obligations.
• Provide guidance on IP ownership, licensing structures, technology commercialization, and protection strategies for new solutions and offerings.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with marketing and branding teams on trademark strategy and usage guidelines.
• Work closely with innovation, digital transformation, and technical leadership teams to embed legal considerations into product development and service delivery.
• Support additional legal and strategic initiatives as assigned.
• JD from a leading and ABA accredited law school.
• Member of at least one State Bar required, including where currently located.
• Preferred 3-5 years of law experience, practicing at a reputable national law firm and/or in-house required.
• Working knowledge of intellectual property rights (e.g., trademark, copyright), open source, and artificial intelligence.
• Ability to show initiative, and to manage multiple diverse matters simultaneously with demonstrated follow-through and timely tracking to deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and to creatively work through business issues as well as legal issues.
• Ability to learn quickly, gain credibility and influence internal business clients at all levels.
• Excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of the organization, a demonstrated strong team player, and a good sense of humor.
• Pragmatic, flexible transactional negotiation style.
• Confident self-starter who also knows when to ask questions and to escalate matters.
• Highly adaptable professional able to maintain a professional and genuine “can do” attitude in response to challenging situations and changing priorities.

Strong emphasis is placed on a candidate with a hands-on style who seeks to handle most legal issues in-house in collaboration with fellow attorneys as well as contracts professionals.

CGI is required by law in some jurisdictions to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The determination of this range includes various factors not limited to skill set, level, experience, relevant training, and licensure and certifications. To support the ability to reward for merit-based performance, CGI typically does not hire individuals at or near the top of the range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range for this role in the U.S. is $100,800.00 - $276,200.00.
