DeWitt LLP is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support attorneys in our Tax and Tax Controversy Practice Group. This position provides administrative and legal support for attorneys representing businesses and individuals in complex tax matters, including audits, administrative appeals, tax litigation, and collection defense.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while working in a fast-paced legal environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative and legal support to attorneys handling federal, state, and local tax controversy matters
- Prepare, format, proofread, and finalize legal correspondence, memoranda, and tax-related documents
- Assist attorneys with audit defense matters, including organizing records, tracking deadlines, and assisting with responses to IRS Information Document Requests (IDRs)
- Support preparation for administrative appeals, including compiling exhibits, preparing correspondence, and coordinating materials for conferences with taxing authorities
- Assist with tax litigation matters, including preparation and filing of pleadings, motions, and other documents with courts such as the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Courts, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims
- Coordinate filings and communications with federal and state courts and administrative agencies
- Prepare and manage correspondence with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state taxing authorities
- Assist attorneys with matters involving collection defense, including documentation related to tax liens, levies, and other collection actions
- Maintain and organize electronic and physical client files in accordance with firm policies
- Track important deadlines, court dates, and administrative filing deadlines
- Manage attorney calendars, schedule meetings, and coordinate calls with clients and government agencies
- Assist with the preparation of engagement letters, client communications, and case status updates
- Process billing, time entry, and expense reports in accordance with firm procedures
Qualifications
- Experience supporting tax controversy, tax litigation, or government regulatory matters
- Familiarity with federal and state court filing procedures
- Experience communicating with government agencies such as the IRS or state departments of revenue
- Associate or bachelor’s degree or legal assistant/paralegal certification preferred, but not required
- 3+ years of experience as a legal assistant in a law firm or professional services environment
- Experience supporting attorneys in litigation or regulatory matters preferred
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Experience with document management and billing systems commonly used in law firms
- Excellent proofreading, formatting, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with a high level of accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with attorneys and staff
