The Director of State Attorneys General & Government Affairs will serve as the strategic hub of the firm’s State Attorneys General practice, driving client engagement, issue management, and forward-looking strategies for a portfolio of clients retained on flat-fee arrangements. The Director of State Attorneys General & Government Affairs will be responsible for identifying priority states and Attorneys General relevant to each client, shaping tailored engagement strategies, and ensuring consistent follow-through for the execution of outreach, reporting, and logistical deliverables. The Director will play a critical role in monitoring political, regulatory, and legal developments at the state level, translating them into actionable strategies, and positioning the firm’s AG team for success in both client advocacy and external visibility. By ensuring seamless coordination between clients, attorneys, practice leadership, and AG stakeholders, the Director will enhance both the impact of client representation and the firm’s standing within the broader State Attorneys General community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Client Management & Strategic Leadership
Serve as the lead strategist for a portfolio of flat-fee clients engaged for State AG representation.
Identify priority states and Attorneys General most relevant to each client’s interests, enforcement risks, and industry.
Develop tailored client strategies, including messaging, engagement plans, and proactive positioning with AG offices.
Draft client-specific talking points, issue analyses, and strategic recommendations.
Supervise the Senior Manager in making targeted outreach to AG offices, tracking interactions, and reporting back regularly to the team on outcomes.
Ensure client service is seamless, combining strategic foresight with consistent execution.
Policy & Issue Monitoring
Continuously monitor AG enforcement actions, legislation, and policy developments that may impact clients.
Provide clients and attorneys with clear, actionable insights on developments in relevant states.
Direct the Senior Manager to track state-specific activity, ensure it is reflected in practice databases, and incorporate into client deliverables.
Conferences & Events
Lead the strategic preparation for key AG conferences (e.g., NAAG, RAGA, DAGA, AGA).
Pinpoint AG offices and officials most critical to each client, setting clear engagement targets for attorneys and team members.
Draft high-level strategy documents, client priorities, and talking points.
Direct the Senior Manager to prepare briefing books, manage invites, and coordinate logistics to ensure meetings with relevant states occur.
Review and evaluate conference outcomes, ensuring touchpoints are captured and leveraged for ongoing engagement.
Organize annual events for clients in collaboration with AG Associations. These events include fundraisers, the AGA Annual Meeting reception, and six political association events—three for democratic associations and three for republican associations.
Management
Supervise and mentor the Senior Manager of Government Relations, setting priorities, providing strategic direction, and ensuring their outreach aligns with client and practice needs; ensure consistent follow-up by the Senior Manager with AG offices, timely reporting back to the team, and proper documentation of interactions.
Provide leadership and guidance to associates, coordinators, and support staff on client-facing and internal projects.
Work closely with practice group leaders and partners to grow the State AG practice through high-quality client service and strategic visibility.
Thought Leadership & Visibility
Draft and oversee thought leadership content that demonstrates the firm’s expertise in State AG issues.
Direct the Senior Manager and marketing team in the distribution and promotion of practice materials.
Build and maintain relationships with Attorneys General, senior staff, and policy stakeholders, positioning the firm as a trusted partner in AG-related matters.
Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities:
Demonstrated ability to lead teams effectively, build productive relationships, and foster a collaborative work environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and respond to inquiries from lawyers, staff, and clients.
Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with lawyers and staff.
Skilled in relating to and influencing individuals at all levels, both internally and externally, to build and maintain productive relationships.
Proven capability to identify issues, develop creative and effective solutions, and resolve conflicts through practical business solutions. Must have a “hands on” tactical approach, with ability to be a strategic thinker.
High level of flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to manage and support change in a fast-paced environment.
Strong supervisory skills to guide and mentor team members effectively.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in political science, law, public administration, or a related field. A JD or advanced degree beneficial.
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in government affairs, legal practice, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in managing client relationships and delivering high-quality service.
Experience in monitoring and analyzing policy developments at the state level.

Hiring Salary Range:
- $200,000 - $225,000
