Job Description

The 12th Judicial District Attorney’s office represents Otero and Lincoln counties.  In the 12th Judicial District, we are committed to holding offenders accountable for their actions while safeguarding the constitutional rights of all individuals. We prioritize the dignity of victims and their families, pursuing truth and justice with integrity and compassion. The 12th Judicial District is recognized as one of the leading districts in the state for the number of jury trials conducted. As a new attorney, with our district, you will have an opportunity to gain experience in and out of the courtroom and advance your career in procescution.

As an Assistant Trial Attorney you will handle a variety of misdemeanors and lower-level felony cases, such as DWIs and bad check cases; does legal research for felony cases for higher level Attorneys; assists in trial teams; works with law enforcement at crime scenes; performs non-prosecution duties such as community outreach; participates on boards and task forces and other groups as assigned; may be required to take an on-call rotation; and performs other related job duties. Felony work is performed under supervision. Incumbent may be required to work under stressful situations and/or conditions. Incumbent may be required to go to crime scenes.

This position requires basic knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure; public relations; organization; basic computer skills; ability to draft legal documents; ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies; ability to communicate effectively; ability to research and analyze information and situations. This position works independently and makes decisions within guidelines which include decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial or negotiate plea agreements. Seeks guidance from assigned supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys.
 
Pursuant to the New Mexico District Attorney’s Compensation Plan, the position of attorney is “At Will” and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

Requirements:
J. D. degree and current license to practice law in New Mexico.

Preferred Qualifications:
Legal experience totaling up to at least one (1) year.

 

Full Time: Monday-Friday 8-5p

Salary: $75,193- $93,992
