Bet Tzedek Legal Services See More Job Openings by This EmployerFor over 50 years, Bet Tzedek Legal Services has provided high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents. The Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (PEHP) aims to provide a wide range of legal services to housed and unhoused persons in collaboration with homeless service providers. To support PEHP in achieving this goal, Bet Tzedek is seeking an intake and brief services attorney to provide legal advice and limited-scope legal services, schedule eligible clients for clinic appointments, or provide the caller with a helpful referral to other social services organizations, when appropriate.
This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ hybrid/remote workplace designation. At the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be required to work in the office or other locations to meet workload/business obligations. This requirement may be on a temporary or ongoing basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
· Provide legal advice during daily phone clinic shifts;
· Provide limited-scope representation to individuals who are at risk of houselessness or unhoused during weekly virtual clinic;
· Work collaboratively with Bet Tzedek’s paralegals and attorneys to address non-housing legal issues identified during intake and assistance;
· Update the PEHP intake guide as appropriate;
· Provide monthly Know Your Rights presentations;
· Refer callers to community and legal resources, when appropriate;
· Write reasonable accommodation and demand letters to enforce the rights of tenants experiencing harassment, illegal rent increases, and violations of the implied warranty of habitability; and
· Other duties as assigned as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Bet Tzedek’s mission of equal justice for all and Bet Tzedek’s core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation (required);
· Active member of California State Bar in good standing (required);
· Ability to work independently while receiving case support and supervision (required);
· Ability to balance a work schedule that requires providing both legal advice and limited-scope services (required);
· Minimum one year experience working in non-profit legal services (preferred)
· Experience in landlord-tenant law (required);
· Familiarity with public benefits, particularly SSI and Medi-Cal (preferred);
· Familiarity with reentry law (preferred); and
· Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties (required).
$72,495.22-$82,001.88
