The U.S. Attorney's Office represents the Federal government in virtually all litigation involving the United States. This includes all criminal prosecutions for violations of Federal law, civil lawsuits by and against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers. Duties The United States Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced and motivated attorney to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Appellate Division. Assistant United States Attorneys in the Appellate Division brief and argue criminal appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and litigate habeas cases in district and appellate courts. The incumbent will be expected to (a) prepare multiple appellate briefs and habeas responses raising complex and novel legal issues each month; (b) argue appeals before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals; (c) assist other prosecutors in writing appellate briefs and preparation for oral arguments; and (d) provide real-time assistance to criminal and civil trial prosecutors throughout the district and includes district court appearances. The incumbent may also be expected to investigate and prosecute a variety of violations of federal laws including immigration, violent crime, drug trafficking, and fraud. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
