- GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Assistant City Attorney is responsible for performing professional legal work on behalf of the City, its officials, and its employees.
- DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts criminal, civil, and administrative litigation, on behalf of the City and its officials/employees, before local, state, and federal courts/agencies, including engaging in discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeals.
- Reviews and authorizes or denies criminal complaints and warrants (including on periodic weekends virtually).
- Drafts and or reviews pleadings, motions, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
- Tracks important dates into software for civil, criminal, appeals and other proceedings.
- Provides legal advice and training to assigned City officials and employees.
- Attends meetings of City boards and commissions as legal counsel as assigned.
- Reviews, investigates, and processes Freedom of Information Act requests, damage claims, and internal complaints.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with court personnel, other City officials and employees, opposing counsel, and the general public.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:1. Strong writing skills and attention to detail.2. Proficient research and computer skills.3. Ability to multi-task assigned case loads.4. Capacity to work collaboratively with city officials, co-workers and other staff members.- MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation from an accredited law school.
- One (1) year of legal experience.
- License to practice law in the State of Michigan.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
