Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Attorney Supervisor to oversee our legal department and provide strategic guidance and leadership on legal matters. The Attorney Supervisor will manage the Junior and Associate attorneys, encouraging their professional growth, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, mitigating legal risks, and supporting the company's objectives. They will report to the Managing attorney and work together with the Senior Associate Attorney(s) and Operations Director as a functional report.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal Strategy and Compliance:
    • Partner with Senior Associate Attorney(s), Operations Director, Legal Operations Manager, and Managing Attorney to discuss and implement legal strategies and policies to support the company's goals and objectives.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
    • 60% of time focused on representing clients, performing attorney-level review of applications to USCIS. 
    • The remaining 40% of the time focused on supervising and mentoring Junior and Associate attorneys, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities (as described below.)



  • Team Management:
    • Supervise and mentor Junior and Associate  attorneys, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
      • One-on-one mentoring of Junior and Associate Attorneys.
      • Periodic review of Junior and Associate Attorneys’ work-product with feedback & coaching provided afterwards. 
    • Assign tasks, set performance goals, and conduct performance evaluations for reporting attorneys. 
    • Conduct regular review of direct reports assigned tasks, set performance goals to ensure alignment with business needs. Discuss suggested changes and obtain approval from the managing attorney. 
    • Communicate regularly with Senior Associate Attorney(s), Operations Director, Legal Operation Manager, and Managing Attorney to convey firm expectations, evolving case strategies, legal updates, performance guidelines, and quality requirements.

  • Risk Management:
    • Identify legal risks and potential liabilities, and work with Senior Associate Attorney(s), Operations Director, and Managing Attorney to develop strategies to mitigate and manage such risks.
    • Communicate with Senior Associate Attorney(s), Operations Director, Legal Operations Manager, and Managing Attorney  on legal matters affecting the company's operations and strategic initiatives.

  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards relevant to the company's operations, and ensure compliance with legal requirements and communicate changes to Senior Associate Attorney(s), Operations Director, Legal Operations Manager, Managing Attorney, and Director of Ethics and Compliance. 


Collaborations with the Ops Team

Strong and effective collaboration and alignment between the Ops team and the Attorney Supervisor is key. They work together in crucial areas such as process improvement, issue identification, and the development of legal operational strategies. This partnership is pivotal to our success.

  • Communications and templates:
    • Drafting: Prepare initial drafts of letters and client communications, including case withdrawals and denial notices.
    • Templates: Creates templates and obtains final approval of templates created from the managing attorney.
    • Determine when it’s time to update an existing template
  • Training:
    • Do sign-offs and reviews of cases completed by new junior and associate attorneys joining the team to provide feedback promptly. 
    • Collaborate with the Legal Quality Training Department  (“LQTD on training initiatives.
    • Assist with updating the FAQ.

  • Bring up solutions for emergency cases and RFE flow issues:
    • Unresponsive clients
    • Change in claims/ denying claims
    • Uncooperative clients
  • Case strategies:
    • Review and Set Strategies: Establish new strategies for denied cases and approve refile strategies.
    • Emergency Strategies: Collaborate with the Ops team to set emergency strategies, such as updating forms or addressing backlogs of briefs. Act as the principal attorney for emergency cases.
  • Operational Strategies: 
    • Strong support for the Case managers team to address issues and doubts regarding cases and processes. 
    • Provide the Ops team with USCIS updates that are relevant to our cases and operations. 
    • Bring potential legislative changes affecting operations to the Ops team's attention and collaborate on planning.
    • Support the Ops team from a legal perspective by updating existing processes and creating new ones for new practice areas.
    • Highlight any potential issues and risks to the Ops team that require new processes to mitigate.
  • Daily Tasks
    • Conduct daily email reviews to monitor RFEs, denials, and rejections, and promptly initiate resolutions.
    • Review decisions and guide the team in communicating outcomes to clients, outlining our strategy and possible alternatives.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active Bar License.
  • 2-5  years of experience practicing law, with significant experience in Immigration Law.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably within a legal department or law firm.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience working in Immigration Law.
  • Knowledge of Immigration Law
  • Experience managing a group of attorneys.

Schedule:
Flexible hours and availability is required during weekends and outside of the normal work schedule.
