GENERAL PURPOSE
The Summer Legal Intern is a limited temporary position to provide assistance to the City Attorney on various legal matters affecting City government and operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of the City Attorney.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda on a variety of municipal law topics
- Draft legal documents such as ordinances and resolutions
- Attend and observe various department or public meetings
- Assist in reviewing and preparing contracts, policies, and other documents
- Analyze statutes, regulations, and case law relevant to local government operations
- Perform other legal and administrative tasks as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current enrollment in an accredited law school
- Completion of at least one year of law school
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Interest in public service and municipal or administrative law
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound judgment
- Strong organizational and communication skills
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Typical office setting with comfortable climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Occasionally lifts or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds. This position has exposure to stressful situations. Work is often performed under deadlines and time constraints.
FLSA AND AT-WILL STATUS
The Summer Legal Intern is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act eligible for minimum wage and overtime pay under applicable provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Summer Legal Intern is considered an at-will position and is not eligible for the protections of Utah Code § 10-3-1105.
