Job Description

The Legal Automation & Innovation Specialist plays a strategic role in advancing the firm’s adoption of cutting-edge technology and AI to transform legal workflows. The Specialist will also leverage commercially available AI tools to design innovative, scalable solutions that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and client service. This position is responsible for developing AI-enabled and traditional automation solutions based on attorney-provided use cases, promoting adoption through targeted training, and ensuring that all applications and integrations meet the firm’s exacting standards for usability, security, and performance. The Specialist will collaborate closely with attorneys, legal assistants, and the Knowledge Management team to identify forward-looking opportunities where AI and automation can deliver strategic value to the practice of law.

Position Reports to: Director of Knowledge Management

Overall Responsibilities:

Primary duties will include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Develop and maintain legal workflow and document automation applications.
  • Design, implement, and refine Agentic AI solutions using commercially available tools (e.g., GPT-based APIs, Claude, Gemini) to enhance legal workflows.
  • Research and evaluate cutting-edge AI tools relevant to the legal sector, with an emphasis on explainability, security, and compliance.
  • Develop scalable AI agents capable of automating multi-step legal processes, including legal research, document review, and client communication support.
  • Build and maintain integrations between legal systems (e.g., intake, conflicts, CRM, document management, etc.) to streamline data flow and reduce manual work.
  • Translate attorney-identified use cases into effective, user-friendly applications.
  • Deliver training to attorneys and staff in both one-on-one and group settings to support application adoption and understanding.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, legal assistants, and the Knowledge Management team to identify new automation and integration opportunities.
  • Document application requirements, workflows, and instructions to ensure clarity and consistency.
  • Ensure all developed applications and integrations adhere to firm policies and industry standards for security and data privacy.
  • Stay current with AI, legal tech, and automation trends and make recommendations for new tools or enhancements.

Required skills:

  • Experience building and deploying AI agents or workflows using commercially available AI platforms.
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and orchestration frameworks for AI applications.
  • Understanding of large language models (LLMs) and their application in legal contexts.
  • Knowledge of data privacy, AI ethics, and responsible AI governance, especially in legal practice.
  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning concepts.
  • Ability to evaluate AI model performance and tune outputs for accuracy and reliability in a legal setting.
  • Awareness of emerging AI tools, standards, and regulatory developments affecting the legal profession.
  • Experience with PatternBuilderMAX or similar automation platforms (e.g., Power Automate, Zapier, or other low-code tools).
  • Familiarity with API concepts and the ability to create or manage integrations between systems (e.g., CRM, DMS, intake/conflicts systems).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex workflows and design efficient technical solutions.
  • Naturally curious and self-motivated, with a strong desire to learn independently and proactively seek out solutions before escalating issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Comfortable presenting to individuals and large groups, both in-person and virtually.
  • Ability to manage small teams or interns, including project oversight and mentorship.
  • Collaborative and approachable, with a client-service orientation.
  • Experience in a law firm or professional services environment preferred.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Coursework or certification in AI, machine learning, or data science preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing AI-driven solutions for business or legal applications is highly desirable.
  • Experience integrating AI systems with legal document management, CRM, or case management platforms is a plus.2–4 years of experience in a law firm, professional services, or technology-focused role preferred.
  • Experience managing interns or junior team members is a plus.
  • Experience delivering user training or technical instruction in a professional setting is desirable.
  • Familiarity with legal workflows, document automation, or knowledge management concepts is a plus but not required.

  • Hybrid work environment, requiring both remote work and periodic in-office presence based on project or team needs.
  • Remote work requires a stable internet connection and a quiet, professional workspace.
  • On-site work takes place in a standard office environment with appropriate professional attire.

Full-time, hybrid position. Regular business hours.
