Open Rank Clinical Professor of Law (Legal Research and Writing)

The Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law at High Point University invites applicants to serve as a Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor of Law, teaching Legal Research and Writing (LRW). The selected candidate will have the exciting opportunity to work in a highly collaborative environment with a holistic approach to legal education that focuses on the doctrinal knowledge, practical skills, and values-based professional identity students need for success in a rapidly evolving legal profession.

Candidates for this position should have a passion for teaching and be well-suited to work in a collegial and student-oriented culture. The selected candidate’s primary responsibility will be teaching three sections of Legal Research and Writing I in the fall semester and three sections of Legal Research and Writing II in the spring semester. Each section will consist of approximately ten students. In addition to teaching, the selected candidate will be expected to write and otherwise help develop the assessments and other coursework for LRW I and II, with most of that work taking place over the summer. The selected candidate will have the same service obligations as other full-time faculty members, including service on law school and/or university committees.

Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. This position is non-tenure; however, if and when the selected candidate is promoted to Clinical Professor of Law, the candidate will have “a form of security of position reasonably similar to tenure, and non-compensatory perquisites reasonably similar to those provided other full-time faculty members,” in accordance with American Bar Association Standard 405(c).

The Kahn School of Law is one of the most recent graduate schools begun by High Point University, an innovative liberal arts institution with over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students and with an expertise in educating students in the life skills critical for professional success. The School of Law will be seeking ABA provisional approval at the earliest opportunity in conformity with ABA Standards. The School of Law welcomed its inaugural class of J.D. students in August 2024.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor from an ABA-approved law school
• Exemplary academic record
• Demonstrated interest in teaching and student mentorship and in creating an inspiring, welcoming, and dynamic learning environment for all students
• Excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with other law school faculty and staff
• Willingness to contribute actively to the mission, vision, and objectives of the School of Law and University
• In accordance with the American Bar Association’s Legal Writing Sourcebook (3d ed. 2020), the selected candidate will have: “sufficient experience as a practicing attorney, with a well-rounded view of the legal profession and the settings in which legal writing occurs; demonstrated excellence in legal analysis, research, and writing . . . ; an interest in pedagogy and scholarship related to the LRW discipline; and the ability to communicate effectively, both in the classroom and in one-on-one conferences with students.”

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching legal research and writing
• Active engagement in professional organizations, such as discipline-specific organizations and bar associations
