Brown & Brown has an opening for a Compliance Attorney on the Regulatory and Legislative Strategy team. This key role on the Regulatory and Legislative Strategy team provides assistance with the research and analysis of the regulations and rules that surround employee benefit laws such as the Affordable Care Act, the Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), ERISA, COBRA, Transparency in Coverage rules, No Surprises Act, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), and many other various laws and regulations associated with the complicated world of health & welfare benefit plan compliance.
This individual will not only support the Regulatory and Legislative team in their endeavors, but also assist with advising other employees of Brown & Brown in the areas of regulatory and legislative strategy related to employer health plans and most importantly, assist customers and prospective customers of Brown & Brown in these same areas.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Develop, articulate, and provide advice on the overall intent and meaning behind the regulation/legislation that governs an employee health & welfare benefit plan.
Stay abreast of any newly released laws, rules, and regulations related to health and welfare benefit laws.
On a daily basis, respond to teammate/Brown & Brown employee questions related to the laws, rules and regulations related to health & welfare benefit plans.
Contribute to articles/guides related to the laws, rules and regulations that apply to health & welfare benefit plans for customers.
Contribute to creating compliance presentations related to the laws, rules and regulations that apply to health & welfare benefit plans for customers, prospective customers, and employer groups and present on those topics.
Contribute to creating compliance presentations related to the laws, rules and regulations that apply to health & welfare benefit plans for training purposes for teammates/employees of Brown & Brown, and present on those topics.
Focus heavily on the writing and research of the more complicated topics related to the laws, rules, and regulations related to health & welfare benefit plans.
Collaborate with other departments including the population health and wellness team, actuarial team, operations teams, communications, marketing, and any other stakeholders the Regulatory and Legislative Strategy teamwork with internally at Brown & Brown.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Juris Doctorate degree required.
Employee benefits background preferred.
Excellent oral and writing skills, with significant experience in writing, reviewing, analyzing and summarizing complicated laws and regulations related to health and welfare benefit compliance, with a proven record of critical thinking and application of the rules.
5+ years of applicable benefits experience.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Entrepreneurial and hands-on attitude, self-starter.
Interpersonal skills – the individual maintains confidentiality, remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits willingness to take on new projects and has a growth mindset.
Ability to manage workflow and are able to communicate with the Reg/Leg team when they need assistance on a project and have the initiative to take on/volunteer for more projects after completion of a project.
Creative thinking, organized thinking, and very detail-oriented
Experience working independently and responding to rapidly changing priorities.
Position may require routine or periodic travel which may require the teammate to drive their own vehicle or a rental vehicle. If required, acceptable results of a Motor Vehicle Record report at the time of hire and periodically thereafter, and maintenance of minimum acceptable insurance coverages are requirements of this position.

Pay range based on experience: $90,000-$140,000. The pay range provided is made in good faith and based on our lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and takes into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for the role.
