Job Description

Job Responsibilities


Under limited supervision, the attorney will perform professional legal work for the State, its subdivisions, and officials by responding to requests from local and statewide public officials for advisory opinions.
  • In response to written requests from both local and statewide public officials, the attorney must conduct independent legal research and draft advisory opinions on a wide variety of legal issues.
  • Receives telephone calls from public officials as well as private citizens concerning various legal issues and assists to the extent possible based on either the attorney’s legal research or the prior opinions of the Attorney General’s Office.
  • May review the work of other attorneys and assist them in both the research and drafting of their own opinions.
  • Performs other related duties by the Deputy Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, and/or Attorney General. Including, but not limited to, special litigation projects as assigned by the Solicitor General or others.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Juris Doctorate Degree

Necessary Requirement: Must be a member and in good standing with the South Carolina Bar. Must satisfy Rule 403 requirements.


Additional Requirements:

  • Must have excellent writing skills.
  • Must be organized and be able to work independently in meeting deadlines.
  • Must be familiar with Westlaw and Microsoft Word suite.
  • Must be able to transport files to court. 






Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and judicial decisions.
