Employment Development Department's (EDD) Legal Office is seeking candidates for the Attorney I position. This position offers a broad range of rewarding legal work for candidates who seek meaningful use of their law degree. The Legal Office supports EDD's mission of strengthening the economic vitality of Californians and their communities.

Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsels and General Counsel, the Attorney I will assist with a broad range of sensitive and complex litigation/legal work of the Legal Office, and as the incumbent progresses through the ranges, they will be assigned progressively more difficult legal work. The Attorney I will advise EDD's Human Resource Services Division (HRSD), Equal Employment Opportunity Office (EEO), and management on legal issues pertaining to personnel and public employment law matters including, but not limited to, employee discipline, reasonable accommodation requests, and workplace leave laws. The Attorney I will review and advise on contract and grant agreements, including novel issues pertaining to the grant programs administered by the EDD. The Attorney I will work with the team's lead attorneys on large cases and projects.

Please note that hybrid telework arrangements will be considered. Additionally, interviews for this position will be conducted virtually.

This position is located in downtown Sacramento. The location provides easy access to the light rail, commuter buses, parking garages, and restaurants.

This is a hybrid position which will require four days per week in-office attendance, beginning July 1,

2025, at our headquarter building in downtown Sacramento (800 Capitol Mall, Sacramento, CA 95814).

Additionally, interviews for this position will be conducted virtually.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience drafting, reviewing and editing legal documents including legal opinions, legislation, regulations, contracts, and legal notices.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong legal, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the Public Records Act and the discovery rules under the Code of Civil Procedure and applicable sections of the Penal Code.
  • Experience handling difficult, complex, and politically sensitive legal issues.
