Law degree (JD) from an accredited institution; admission in good standing to the Kentucky Bar or eligible for admission within six (6) months and six (6) years of experience as a practicing attorney. Grade 14 (Salaried)

Position Description:

The Associate University Counsel position in the Office of University Counsel reports to the Deputy General Counsel. The Associate University Counsel will be expected to provide legal advice on a wide range of legal matters impacting a metropolitan research institution of higher education, with a primary focus on advising the institution’s leadership and key personnel on legal compliance with legislation, executive orders, regulatory guidance, etc. affecting the University of Louisville and its affiliated entities, as well as managing litigation matters handled by outside counsel and handling internal/external administrative matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Acts as the practice leader for the Office of University Counsel’s Regulatory Affairs practice group, which includes advising and training the administration and other units/departments on legal compliance with legislation, executive orders, regulatory guidance, etc. affecting the University of Louisville, and its affiliated entities.

  • Directs and advises administration and unit/office personnel on the University of Louisville’s compliance with Kentucky’s HB4, An Act Related to Initiatives involving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and other emerging legislation and regulatory guidance at the federal, state, and local levels.

  • Assists the EVP/Chief Legal Counsel and Deputy General Counsel with the drafting, review, revision, implementation, etc. of administrative and academic policies governing the institution, including those necessary to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws.

  • Monitors legislative, regulatory actions, executive orders, and court rulings to ensure that the University is meeting any new or modified compliance and risk management requirements.

  • With oversight from the Executive Vice President for Legal, Governance, and External Relations/Chief Legal Counsel and the Deputy General Counsel, acts as the practice leader for the Office of University Counsel’s Litigation practice group, which includes coordinating the oversight and management of the litigation matters handled by outside counsel of the University and its affiliated entities.

  • Provides representation of the University in agency matters and/or administrative due process hearings.

  • Assists on other legal matters affecting a metropolitan research institution of higher education.

  • Supervises assigned personnel within the Office of University Counsel, as appropriate.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
