Job Description

Overview

The Associate Counsel – Trademark and Licenses/Permits will assist the Assistant General Counsel, General Counsel, and other attorneys in legal matters affecting the organization, including trademark and other intellectual property management and enforcement, and will be responsible for obtaining and maintaining licenses, permits, and registrations required for operation of the Company's retail convenience stores/travel centers.  Additional support may include litigation, commercial matters, and real estate.

NOTE: This position is located in our Pearland, Texas office. This is an in-office only opportunity Monday - Friday.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the management of IP for the Company
  • Provide support with respect to trademark and other IP filings, disputes, and lawsuits
  • Work on dispute and litigation matters, including investigation, pleadings, motions, discovery, hearings, trials, and appeals
  • Research and identify licenses, permits, and registrations (e.g., business licenses, alcohol licenses, health and food service permits, cigarette and tobacco licenses, fuel and other weights/measures/metering permits and registrations) required in various jurisdictions for the operation of the Company’s retail convenience stores/travel centers
  • Research laws, regulatory requirements, and guidelines relevant to required operational licenses, permits, and registrations
  • Coordinate with corporate and store employees, as well as third party consultants and counsel, concerning operational licenses, permits, and registrations
  • Gather and obtain information for, and prepare applications and conduct other necessary actions for, operational licenses, permits, and registrations
  • Work directly with relevant authorities to obtain and maintain/renew, licenses, permits, and registrations
  • Negotiate contracts and offer legal counsel on contracts, agreements, and processes and procedures to facilitate implementation of commercial agreements and their enforcement
  • Work, as requested, on real estate matters for the Company
  • Assist other attorneys in the legal department with a variety of matters
  • Collaborate with all departments to deliver timely and responsive legal services
  • Maintain familiarity with current and proposed laws and regulations and case guidance involving all assigned matters
  • Research specific legal issues and share results with the legal team
  • Gather and obtain information for insurance policy applications and renewals
  • Maintain organized files and track critical deadlines for a variety of matters
  • File documents and electronic data into databases
  • Utilize software to obtain signatures on electronic documents
  • Return phone calls and emails
  • Setup and preparation of meetings
  • It is an essential function of this job for the employee to work in office/in the employee’s assigned work site. No remote work is available.

  • Employee must be able to perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation

The job requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • The Associate Counsel must be licensed to practice law in Texas or be licensed in another state and be eligible to become licensed in Texas within one year 
  • The Associate Counsel must have attended law school and must possess a Doctor of Jurisprudence
  • Trademark law experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience is preferred
  • Must maintain and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Proficient skill level with Microsoft Applications is required
  • Proficient skill level with Lexis and Westlaw is required
  • Prior experience working as an in-house attorney is preferred
  • Prior experience with dispute and litigation matters, and with drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements, is preferred
