Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Who we are:
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting all felony and certain misdemeanor offenses which occur within the jurisdiction of Chesterfield County. Additionally, they provide services to inform citizens about our criminal justice system; work closely with police officers and magistrates to provide 24- hour legal advice; conduct mock trials to education local law enforcement personnel and contribute to the county's legislative package in the areas of criminal law and procedure. 

What you will learn:
The Commonwealth’s Attorney Intern will assist prosecutors in preparing for Court through legal research, spend time observing Court, and assist with file processing and preparation. We typically have law students who also do the above, handle cases under the Third Year Practice Program, and visit other partner agencies to learn more about their involvement in the criminal justice system. This position would also be able to join on those "field trips" to Department of Forensic Science, Medical Examiner, etc.  Perform other work as required.

The Chesterfield Experience:
As an intern in Chesterfield County, you will have an opportunity to meet with county leaders, collaborate with your peers, attend training seminars, and participate in team building exercises to complement what you will be learning in the professional work environment provided by the Commonwealth’s Attorney department.  

Internship Requirements and Eligibility

  • To be considered for the Internship Program, students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8. Students accepted into the Internship Program must be able to participate in the full 10-week program, exhibit a commitment to public service, and a genuine interest in learning about public administration.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
  • To be successful, the intern would need strong research skills, a respect for confidentiality and sensitive information, and good social skills. This position would be suitable to anyone looking at a career in law or law enforcement. Intern must be at least 18 years of age or older. 
  • This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice’s “Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy” and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.

Program Dates

The Summer 2026 program will be held from May 26, 2026 to July 30, 2026.

  • Applications are accepted until February 15, 2026. 
  • Candidates will be notified of selection by April 3, 2026.
Program Pay Rates

Undergraduate-$17.00/hour; Graduate-$19.00/hour
