Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the leading omnichannel retailer serves athletes and outdoor enthusiasts in more than 850 DICK’S Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Public Lands, Going Going Gone! and Warehouse Sale stores, online, and through the DICK’S mobile app. DICK’S also owns and operates DICK’S House of Sport and Golf Galaxy Performance Center, as well as GameChanger, a youth sports mobile platform for live streaming, scheduling, communications and scorekeeping.

DICK’S Sporting Goods is seeking an experienced Corporate Counsel to join their growing in-house legal team, focusing on legal matters related to emerging technology, privacy and data. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of emerging technologies, advertising, and retail, to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to provide strategic legal support related to DICK’S digital marketing strategies. The ideal candidate will bring 3-5 years of experience and a digital-first solution-oriented mindset and deep understanding of technology, digital media, and privacy as well as advertising laws. This position is ideal for an attorney with a growth and data-driven mindset who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced, and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contract Negotiation, Drafting, and Design (50%)

    • Develop and manage contractual frameworks to streamline the contracting process for internal and external stakeholders.

    • Key contract types include, data processing agreements (DPAs), clean room and data collaboration agreements, advertising, insertion orders technology and SaaS agreements.

    • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts related to advertisers, agencies, technology partners, and vendors.

  • Advice and Counsel (20%)

    • Provide strategic legal advice and counsel on a variety of matters related to digital advertising, emerging technology including:

      • AdTech and Retail Media

        • Ensure compliance with global, federal, and state laws related to privacy, consumer protection, advertising, and e-commerce.

        • Provide legal guidance for the company’s retail media network, including self-service advertising platforms, clean rooms, sponsored products, and programmatic advertising.

      • Data Privacy and Security + Regulatory and Industry Standards

        • Partner with internal regulatory compliance counsel and the privacy and compliance teams to ensure advertising practices align with data governance practices, data privacy laws and data security laws.

        • Partner with internal regulatory counsel to synthesize regulatory issues and legal implications to provide guidance on the use of first-party and third-party data in targeted advertising and analytics.

      • Regulatory and Industry Standards

        • Partner with internal regulatory counsel and internal marketing counsel to  advise on evolving laws and industry best practices in advertising, media, and digital marketing.

        • Advise on advertising laws and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines.

      • Intellectual Property

        • Counsel on intellectual property issues related to advertising, trademarks, copyrights, and licensing agreements.

  • Outside Counsel Interaction (10%)

    • Identify emerging legal issues and collaborate with internal and outside counsel on matters related to privacy, AdTech and regulatory compliance.

  • Subject Matter Expertise (10%)

    • Provide subject matter expertise on topics such as technology, privacy, digital advertising, personalization, media, advertising laws and data governance.

    • Knowledge of accounting/finance principles and retail operations is preferred.

  • Department Collaboration (10%)

    • Participate in legal department projects, processes, and initiatives.

    • Collaborate with other Legal team members.

Requirements:

Education Requirements:

  • JD from an accredited law school (required).

  • CIPP/US is strongly preferred.

  • MBA or similar business-related degree is preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of legal experience, with a strong foundation in law firm and/or corporate legal department settings.

  • Expertise in technology, privacy law and digital advertising, data governance, media law, and intellectual property.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Admitted to the Bar in Pennsylvania (required).

  • Additional certifications in business or technology-related fields (e.g., MBA, CIPP/US) are preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong negotiation skills with a focus on creating efficient, business-friendly contracts.

  • Ability to provide clear, actionable, and strategic legal advice across a variety of disciplines.

  • Experience managing complex legal issues in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.

  • Collaborative team player who can work effectively with cross-functional teams, including marketing, technology, and business development.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and business acumen.

  • Advanced Degree

  • JD Degree

  • 3-5 years of experience

  • Experience practicing law, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department.
