Duties

Position Summary

Under direction of the General Counsel, the Assistant Attorney provides quality legal service to departments within the System on matters requiring legal attention which arise in the course of the System's business and operations, including advice interpreting and implementing the laws governing the System and other laws applicable to the System. It is anticipated that the position will be primarily focused on the System's transactional matters. In addition to transactional matters, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to work on and learn various other aspects of the System’s legal work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment, potentially including, but not limited to, benefits matters, Powers of Attorney, trusts, domestic relations orders, labor and employment matters, litigation matters, legislative matters.

The duties of the Assistant Attorney include, but are not limited to, the following:

Negotiate procurement and investment contracts, prepare opinions, determination letters and memorandum of law
Applicant will be expected to develop and serve as a subject matter expert on benefits, investments, operations, regulatory and compliance related matters
Respond to records requests and subpoenas
Review trust documents for beneficiary designations and banking transactions, Guardianships, Powers of Attorney, domestic relations orders, and other court documents
Interpret statutes and rules and regulations
Respond to System litigation
Provide advice and counsel on benefits, investments, operations and compliance matters which may arise in course of System's operation
Administer PowerPoint presentations on different topics to NYSTRS staff
Assist the General Counsel and other Office of the General Counsel staff as needed

Salary
  • $110,113 - $123,933/year
Qualifications

Must be a graduate of an accredited U.S. law school with a JD degree, or foreign equivalent; AND
Admission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for admission within six months)

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of and/or interest in pension plans
Interest in investments legal work, including public equities, fixed income, real estate, private equity, private debt, derivatives, and securities litigation.
Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, such as non-disclosure agreements, vendor agreements, licensing agreements, investment management agreements, commingled fund documents, etc.
Experience reading/interpreting legal documents, including, but not limited to, trusts, powers of attorney and domestic relation orders, discovery demands.
Experience interpreting and drafting statutes and regulations
Litigation experience, specifically with Article 78 proceedings
Experience or interest in labor and employment law
Tax law experience
Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
Excellent communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to effectively work within a deadline driven environment
Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers
Ability to multi-task and manage changing priorities
Highly accurate, organized, and logical work habits
