Job Description

The Legal Services Director is responsible for the implementation of all legal services that support the organization’s mission to end and prevent homelessness for clients served through One80 Place programs. The Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of attorneys who provide direct legal representation throughout a 20-county service area in the Midlands and Lowcountry and to ensure implementation and compliance of legal services funded through Equal Justice Works (EJW), Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and SC Bar Foundation/IOLTA programs. The Director will also provide direct legal representation.

 

One80 Place ends and prevents homelessness throughout South Carolina with offices located in Charleston and Columbia. This position can be based in either office.


STATUS: Full-time, Regular / Exempt

Requirements

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Juris Doctor Law Degree and license with the SC Bar required. 
  2. Demonstrated team leadership and management experience.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
  4. A willingness to embrace change and think creatively about serving clients.
  5. Excellent computer skills including basic office programs and the ability to learn and utilize appropriate database programs.
  6. Ability to work independently and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  7. Ability to relate effectively and without judgment with individuals experiencing homelessness. 
  8. Ability to identify housing-related trends that could be affected by strategic litigation.
  9. Ability to develop and strengthen relationships with community partners and key stakeholders.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  1. Oversees the provision of legal services required by SC Bar Foundation/IOLTA, SSVF and EJW. This includes services provided by both legal and non-legal staff. 
  2. Provides direct legal representation.
  3. Oversees and coordinates ongoing training of legal services staff in accordance with specific grant agreements.
  4. Work with the CPO and CCO to develop annual work plans for the legal services program. 
  5. Works with legal services staff to identify potential barriers to accessing legal services and provide support and advocacy to overcome such barriers. 
  6. Coordinates the provision of information and outreach to the community regarding legal services, especially those provided through EJW. 
  7. Stays abreast of developments in eviction, right to council laws and changes in procedures and provides guidance to staff on potential advocacy efforts.  
  8. Participate actively in Program Director and Management Team meetings and monthly check-ins to ensure that work completed is in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  9. Model and promote One80 Place’s values for all team members.
  10. Participate as an effective and engaged member of the management team.
  11. Ensure One80 Place’s compliance with grant requirements.
  12. Foster collaborative relationships with other legal service providers, advocacy and community groups, the courts and others.
  13. Perform any agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Chief Program Officer or other leadership staff.

  6. Must be willing to work beyond required hours if extra effort is required to complete assignments or if dictated by crises.
