Job Description

LEGAL ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST (2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE)

The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental agency that manages the water resources in the southern half of the state, covering 16 counties from Orlando to the Florida Keys, and serves 8.7 million Florida residents.  It is the oldest and largest of the state's five water management districts. Our mission is to safeguard and restore South Florida's water resources and ecosystems, protect our communities from flooding, and meet the region's water needs while connecting with the public and stakeholders. 

The District’s Office of Counsel seeks an experienced legal secretary with a proven track record in civil and appellate matters to support our litigation attorneys. Required skills include initiating and preparing cases, e-filing through the State of Florida E-Filing Portal, setting hearings, submitting proposed orders, and resolving issues in collaboration with the court, judicial staff, and colleagues. Familiarity with the United States Federal District Court for the Southern District of Florida is a plus. Responsibilities also include drafting, formatting, and proofreading legal documents and correspondence; managing attorneys' time entries; scheduling and calendaring deadlines; arranging travel; and registering attorneys for CLE courses.

Superior word-processing skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, along with strong organizational and writing skills, are required for this position. Experience with a document management system is preferred. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has excellent customer service and problem-solving skills, and balances multiple priorities in a busy litigation setting.

Employment Guidelines:  Candidates typically possess an Associate’s Degree with a legal specialization and at least 6 years of experience in legal administrative and technical support. Proficiency in legal office applications, interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, sensitivity to confidential information, and strong customer service skills in a professional environment are essential.

NOTE: This position may be filled at the lower level of Legal Administrative Assistant 3. Candidates typically possess an Associate’s Degree with a legal specialization and at least 4 years of experience in legal administrative and technical support. Proficiency in legal office applications, interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, sensitivity to confidential information, and strong customer service skills in a professional environment are essential.

License:    Valid State of Florida Driver's License

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times be required to provide support before, during, and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
